Fwo of them are located in North Van- couver. The port corporation favors the siting of a new cruise ship terininal in the central waterfront area between Canada Place and Main Street on the south side of the inlet. But criteria identified by cruise line of- ficials place a site east of Lonsdale Quay, _ the Versatile-Cassiar complex, as the se- cond ‘best site upon which to locate a cruise ship terminal. The Alaskan cruise business has grown dramatically over the past decade. This year,’ 18 ships representing eight major cruise lines will bring more than $106 million and over 360,000 tourists to the Vancouver area, The North Shore would benefit directly and greatly, by the location of a cruise ship terminal in North Vancouver. There are seme missing pieces to the in- frastructural puzzle to be solved in support of such a facitity, but the investment would be worthwhile. { Let’s push for our share of the love boat industry.: LETTER OF THE DAY — Defend anyone’ S right to express Views Dear Editor: Although most of. the time I consider myself to be one of the silent majority, I feel compelled to uwrite to. you regarding the recent -. ‘anti-hate amendments to the B. con ‘Human Rights Act... ; ; These amendments are “nothing more than'a vehement attack’ on British Columbians’ freedom -of speech, and a frightening abuse of . power ‘by an. apprehensive gov- | ernment. To me, having lived with you now for 38 years, you're looking better than ever. And why not? You're still, and always will be, one fabulous hunk of real estate — now, since the Soviet Union split up, the largest in the world under single Gwner- ship. Rich in resources, much of you is spectacularly beautiful, ~ with sophisticated modern cities and a Prairie breadbasket big enough to feed an entire conti- nent. No wonder the UN named you last year the best place on Earth to live. So why all the moaning we constantly hear on every side to- day? Since there's obviously nothing wrong with you yourself, Canada, there must be something a bit odd “ about quite a number of Cana- dians. Including the 1.6 million or more jobless and the 10% on. welfare. ‘ Maybe it's understandable for them to feel this country isn’t working right for them any more. But naturally they're wrong, None of their misery is YOUR fault, Canada. it's PEOPLE, not countries, who produce global recessions like the one that’s brought grief to every industrialized western na- tion, not just to Canadians. It's PEOPLE, not countries, who let themselves be bribed into electing politicians incapable of doing their job — and who then despair of the whole system, cry- ing that the sky is falling in. And it's PEOPLE, not coun- tries, who suffer identity problems like the one afflicting many Ca- nadians as a result of living too close to Uncle Sam. After all, we talk and eat like Americans, watch - “mostly American TV and read " American magazines. ‘ We play American footbail Gor of) and America’s national ga baseball. We copy American cheerleaders and marching bands. We hold American-style , political conventions. We run our election campaigns with Ameri- can-style hoopla. And according to a recent Maclean’s/CTV pall, 20% of Canadians would like to join the U.S. In short, Canada, you're inhab- ited by some pretty forgetful types and tomorrow's the day to jog { thoroughly accept that it is ~ their right to say what they want, so long as I am able to refute their opinions without fear of be- ing. carted off to the hoosegow.
