The North Vancouver resident has traded his cigarettes in for a racing bike, running shoes and swimming togs which will be put to the test on May 21. Triathlon training finally ends 25-year smoking habit AFTER YEARS of smoking and half-hearted attempts to quit, David McAdam has at last found a way to dig himseif out of that quandary. He decided to train for a triathlon. “T smoked all my adult life — for 25 years. I've quit dozens of times for varying times but I’ve always gone back,’’ said the 44- year-old = group insurance sales manager. lt started a few when, after consistent pressure from his doctor who is also a triathlete, McAdam started ty think seriously about quitting and training. “fT guess it was a combination of wanting to be fit and some- vears age thing to get me to quit smoking. | wanted something with a zoal that would make me do it.” But ic wasn't until last January that RecCentre Ron Andrews provided the missing ingredient. McAdam saw a poster adver- tising a triathlon clinic for begin- ners led by both loval and world class competitors, including triathletes Carol Montgomery and Paul Granger. “It was the best thing | could have imagined for me. J just thought these are really down- to-earth people who get off on doing it. It's not a snooty sport."’ Since that clinic McAdam has quit smoking and devoted what time he can spare to training. “It’s sort of a mind set. I can’t conceive of smoking and training at the same time. It’s incompati- blew” he says. Capilanos Atumni Day will be held at Klahanie Park on Satur- day, June 2 with games beginning at 11:30 a.m. The official sod tur- ning for the new field will take place at 1 p.m. Track preliminaries under way FOUR DAYS of preliminaries leading to the North Shore high school track and field champion- ships continue until May 10 at Handsworth beginning at 2:45 p.m. each day. Fouzteen schools are involved. The preliminaries qualify athletes for 99 events at the 30th annual meet on May 17 at Swangard Stadium from 8:45 a.m. to 3:45 p.m. For the first time, the triple jump will be held in each of the four girls’ age divisions. A total of 28 other long distance, javelin and discus events are finals during preliminaries.
