8 -- Friday, November 22, 1996 -- N hy mn Thanks for the support Dear Editor: I'd fike to give sincere thanks to all those who supported me in my can- didacy for councillor in the recent West Vancouver District election. The experience of run- ning was truly once in a lifetime (though I will run again next time). I'd also like to congrat- ulate the 17 other candi- . dates. You are fine people who truly care about our municipality. To those elected, good race and good luck! Please remember your promises and never forget that your first duty is to the people of West Vancouver. Martin Ernst West Vancouver No rec funds Dear Editor: T found E. Klasson's letter in your paper very interesting. He is so right. Why should we as taxpayers pay for recreational and cul- tural projects? If the support is not there and the moncy not available, why should ones that will never use them pay? E. Donovan North Vancouver Fitz & Floyd 4 Candles We Dear Editar: A heartfelt thank you to all the North Vancouver District residents who voted for me on Nov. 16. 1 ain traly grateful and humbled by the over- whelming public contidence giving me the highest vote by far. A special bouquet to those who contributed their shoe leather and hard carned money. I have every intention to make the new directions and fundamental reform outlined in my election program come true. This will only be possible if our citizens continue to actively participate in the affairs of our focal govern- ment. Politicians, however well-intentioned, can only be effective if they’re backed by the public. Thank you also to all those who worked so hard to ensure the passage of the all-impor- tant Loan Authorization Bylaw, It will give us the badly needed breathing space we need to build up our Heritage Fund so that future councils will be spared the dilemma the present council had to face as a result of the disastrous con- sequences of district's mis- managed fiscal and land poli- cies of the last 15 years. We can now build the facil- ities we so badly need and make the work of our many volunteers working with youth and seniors easier. 1 will also endeavor to pro- mote greater authority and responsibility for existing neighborhood — committees who, I believe, can play a key role in shaping and improving neighborhood and communt- ty livability. In addition I will push for a fundamental change in our public trans- portation system to help fam- ilies cope with the rising cost of having to rely exclusively on multi-car transportation needs. The present discrimination of the GVRD and BC Transit against North Shore residents must end and so must logging in the watershed. We need a strong voice to speak up for our interests. I will also push for funda- mental changes in the Municipal Act as an addition- al means to save taxpayers money and make government more efficient. onderful Opportunity to Buy Your Christmas Presents at: BOXING DAY PRICES All our brand, name products will be discounted. I will also work for amalyga- mation benveen the City and the District. There too | have a plan that can save North Vancouver taxpayers consider- able money. With the district's fiscal house in order the city should no longer object to a union. All in all I am extremely confident that we can meet the challenges we face without forcing, many citizens out of their house and home. And finally thank you also to the News for its extensive election coverage. We must continue to support the News in its effort to enhance com- munity awareness.
