“IF ONLY. {could go back 12
years,” I say to myself from
time to time, “I would have
attended California’s Art
Centre College of Design and
become a car designer.”

This may sound odd to some of
you who might instead dream of
becoming a doctor — or dare I say
lawyer — but to a hopeless car nut
like me, nothing is more exciting
than a piece of automotive art.

Instead of becoming a car design-
er, however, 1 became an automotive
engineer and worked at companies
like General Motors and Suzuki
Motors of Japan. J also became a car
writer. Not a bad compromise, | fig-
ured.

Nevertheless, my fascination with
automotive design still draws me to
the world-class automotive design
school in Califomia. The non-profit
college has produced about half of
the country’s car stylists, including
such prominent designers as Ford’s
Jack Telnack and Tom Matano, the
head of Mazda's U.S. design studio.

Here are two most recently com-
pleted projects:

ELECTRIC CARS AND
RECHARGING STATIONS

The Electric Power Research
Instinite (EPRI) aims to discover,

. develop, and research the latest

advances in utility-related technolo-
gy. In early summer, the institute
sponsored the Art Centre College
students to develop concepts for
electric vehicles and recharging sys-
tems.

Califomia is a very appropriate
location for this project because the
State is one of the most prominent
supporters of the electric vehicle pro-
gram.

For this project, the students not
only designed innovative, unique-
looking vehicles but also developed
concepts for an auto-docking
recharging system to support the
vehicles.

The auto-docking system is sig-
nificant in that it is a hands-free
operation, in which the batteries are
charged without any prompt from
the driver. Using this system, the
electric car will always be fully
charged because it is automatically
charged every time the car is parked
in the garage.

At the end of the 14-week pro- .
ject. the students presented clay
models representing their vision of
the future electric car/station sys-
tems.

Peter Canis, for example,
designed a narrow, aircraft-like vehi-
cle in which the driver and the pas-
senger sit in tandem (sce photo).
