A 22-YEAR-OLD, formerly long-
haired man was arrested and
charged with vandalism in Hengelo,
the Netherlands, in December, after
he allegedly caused $50,000 damage
to a barber shop. He said he had
grown increasingly upset that, two
wecks before, a barber had wildly
overdone his request for a “slight
trim.”

At least a dozen Hungarians have
committed suicide since 1989 as a
result of a widespread pyramid
scheme in earthworms that spread
with the country’s diminishing eco-
nomic fortunes. Typically, a family
would purchase several hundred
thousand earthworms with proceeds
from their life's savings or borrow-
ing heavily at 30% interest.
Eagrthworms cat manure and excrete
-theiz own nutrient-rich dung, and
promoters, with the help of govern-
ment agencies and banks, fraudu-
lently convinced the investors that
such rich ‘soil could easily be sold
abroad.

In October ia Orlando, Florida,
James Zimmerman, 39, was charged
-with grand theft of gasoline.

Guelph, Ontario. Colin, his (win
brother Douglas, brothers David, 40,
and Philip, 37, and the wife of
another brother, have among them
more than 140 criminal convictions.
Yel another brother had a lengthy
criminal record, but has recently
gone straight. When Douglas was
deported to England in 1985, he had
to be flown on a military airplane
because commercial airlines would
not take anyone so violent. The
other brothers will be deported, also,
at the end of their prison sentences.
At Douglas’ deportation hearing,
their mother, Patricia Wood,
described her sons as “a family of
young gentlemen.”

Recent beatings in the news:
Larry Weaver, 27, of Allentown,
Pennsylvania, punched his mother
in February in frustration at not
being able to conncet his VCR to his
TV set; Jose Archuleta, 32, in San
Antonio in March attacked the dri-
ver of an ice cream truck that was
playing Pop! Goes the Weasel
repeatedly over the loudspeaker:
Tracy and John O°Donnell of
Westport, Connecticut, brawled on
their wedding day in August after
Tracy thought John was putting
cake into her mouth too hard.

impressed me mightily; espe-
cially the following: “We
rightly pay our respects to
those who fost their lives
defending something they
believe in. But, like it or not,
as long as people organize
themselves into nation states,
we will have war.”

As I put it: “The dissolving har-
mony and peace between nations is
indicative of Neptune in Libra
(1943-1957). Libra (relationships)
brings more war and trouble than
peace.

“Alliances built on expediency
and diplomacy, nationally and inter-
nationally, are still bringing the har-
vest of discord.

“Until the lessons of love are
learned collectively and recognition
of the rights of every being (includ-
ing our planet) are respected, there
will be no end to war and no peace
on Earth.”

And, as the “News Viewpoint”
further pointed out, “Our urge to
destruction is as real and powerful
as our urge to greatness as builders
of civilization.

“But we have a choice about
which urge to give expression to.
We cauld acknowledge our ‘good
angel’ and her message that we are
all sisters and brothers.”

These views and the considera-
tions of Bob Hunter, “Exhuming
the roots of animal hatred” (last
week) make me proud to be a con-
tributor to the North Shore News
as does the determination to allow
Doug Collins a forum. I have met
Mr. Collins. I} have seen and appre-
ciated the twinkle in his eye. He has
a perfect right to his views. They
certainly balance my own.

1 gathered up 25 or so of the
April 10 editions in order to send
friends in far-off places (including
my three sons in New York) copies
of our publisher's “Silver
Speckulations,” entitled “Birth of a
newspaper.”

Itis, clearly, one of the most
exciting and inspiring stories (great
lessons in it) t have ever read. If
you missed it, call me,and (ll pro-
vide you with a copy.

It ought to be shared with high
schocl students (with everyone,
really) as an example of many vital
things (not the least of which, the
sanity of humor). .

All the more power to such
enterprising, resourceful and coura-
geous people as Mr. Speck!
