Sun and showers mixture
makes for good growing

FIRST A look on the bright side, Iam sure many of you
feel we deserve better than this current mix of sun and
showers considering the miserable stuff we endured over
what recently passed for a spring.

However, you should not be
too hasty; this weather is just as
good for us gardeners as it is for
ducks.

Warm weather, periods of solid
sunshine and overnight cloud-
bursts, are all contributing to
make this a relatively good grow-
ing season.

There are some areas for con-
cern, to be sure. The above com-
bination is perfect for the growth
and spread of some fungal
diseases such as Black Spot, Apple
Scab and Powdery Mildew.

The best way to slow the spread
of problems such as these is to
temove infected leaves and flowers
as soon as they appear.

Most of these diseases spread by
sending out spores from infected
tissue.

Also try to improve the air cir-
culation in the arca whenever
possible. This neans moving
planters and baskets that are hav-
ing problems into more open
areas.

complished with a little judicious

pruning; thinning nearby trees and
shrubs will facilitate the freer
passage of air.

Do your watering first thing in
the morning. This wiil allow the
garden to dry out well before the
evening hours.

The spores of fungal diseases
spread more readily in the damp

darkness of warm clear nights.

You should also avoid watering
during the mid-afternoon on ex-
cessively hot days as this can
cause sun scald.
