<=ASHION Borrowed clothes have special charm (or appeal) THERE IS something in- timate about wearing other people’s clothes. By Carol Crenna Contributug Writer It may be your best friend's dress, your husband’s sweater, roommate's coat, or your mother’s hat. Their warmth and spirit seem to rub off on their clothes, and when you slip into them, these attributes are instantly yours. If you have a friend whose closet you like to invade as much as your own, if her clothes give you a feeling of security similar to a cosy chat by the fire, you are not alone. Many woman can appreciate the fact that wedring another's clothes makes them feel the warmth and trust they find in the friendship. It was a certain block-colored skirt of a close friend that 1 bor- rowed whenever I. wanted to feel fashion-forward and totally put together. A jean jacket of another good buddy was so difficult to give up because I loved the way it made me feel outdoorsy and fun-loving. When you were young, you may have thought the clothes of others possessed some kind of magical powers. If you didn’t play “dress-up’”’ with your mother’s (or father’s) wardrobe, you may have had an older sister who'd have strangled you if she knew you had paraded around in her best dress and stockings. Hand-me-downs, of course, were not the same. This clothing’s energy and warmth had Jong since faded, My mother had a coat she kept only for special occasions, and it was this item that [ would secretly wrap myself in whenever I felt the need. It gave me a sense of glamor and maturity that nothing else seemed to provide. An impromptu borrowing is also a special event, At times when you're getting ready at a friend’s place for a night out, she gets a glimmer in her eye and says, ‘I've got just the hat for that outfit,’ or, “Why don’t you take my other jacket, it'll keep you warm.” It is a small offering, but also a precious part of that friend. The fact that these clothes feel great may be because they have been properly broken in. Like new clothes, they offer a different view of yourself when you put them on, but unlike new clothes, they don't have to be kept and coddled until they finally suc- cumb to the curves of your body. Naturally, the best clothes to borrow are those that belong toa man you care for, Wearing something of his brings him that much closer to you when you’re alone. That comforting and dependable garment is a cherished item in your wardrobe, though you may not reveal that to him, It could even be an old green sweatshirt that a college boyfriend lent you once, and you haven't seen him in years but you're still wearing it. It's been washed hun- dreds of times, but whenever you pull it on, you still remember the cologne he wore, and the time you spent together, For some reason, clothes seem to signify the original owner's most admirable qualities. It is this type of psychology that has inspired the overwhelming success of the ‘‘boyfriend jacket.”’ For the last few. seasons, this term has become a staple in fash- ion vocabulary. “Who would have thought that women would wear an item in a man’s closet so habitually that the womenswear manufacturers, not wanting to lose their customer to a friend or family member, would offer a suitable alternative calted the boyfriend jacket? It has the same oversized fit and cut, even showing the sleeves roll- ed up, and is everything your F. ASHION FILE is a weekly Sunday column.
