Indeed, gardens and gardening are part of our culture, figuring in religion, literature, legend and myth. According to surveys, most households are involved in one or many forms of gardening in- cluding Jawn care and tending houseplants. And many of those who don’t garden enjoy visiting parks and botanical gardens. Many urban dwellers, however, don’t just visit gardens — they grow gardens on their balconies or in windowsills. Or they share in tending a community garden, often a vacant lot transformed from an eyesore into a thing of beauty through the effort of neighbors working together. North Shore residents’ usually maintain more elaborate gardens, which supply their homes with fresii flowers and their tables with fresh vegetables and fruits.
