French immersion program ofiers fun environment YOU DON’T need the four walls of a stuffy classroom to learn a new language. By Wendy Haysom Contributing Writer Fresh air and fun will make the learning go better, say the teachers of West Vancouver’s Sentinel High School late French immer- sion program, which is open to anyone on the North Shore. If Josee Cleremont and Annie Bouchard get their way, come September their new grade seven late immersion studerts will be swimming, kayaking, cross-coun- try skiing and hiking up moun- tains. The school is throwing open the classroom door to motivate the students. It is also a bid to attract enough students to enable the six-year-old late French program to survive. It needs 20 students to operate Learn to self-publish HOME-BASED entrepreneurs such as Buzz Bezanson’ have found many rewards and extra in- come in the self-publishing business. A. six-hour course called Suc- cessful Booklet Self-Publishing . will be presented by Bezanson on Wednesday, April 29 and Wed- nesday, May 6, at the Lucas Cen- tre, 2132 Hamilton Ave., North Vancouver. The class runs from 7 to 10 p.m. According to Bezanson, ‘‘You don't need expensive desktop publishing equipment and you don’t need to invest a lot of money to start. For less than $100 you can start your own home- based publishing business.’’ During the program Bezanson will give instruction on how to choose self-publishing ideas, how to write, edit, print and bind publications. He will also suggest where and how people can market their information. The course includes a workbook and information hand-outs. For preregistration or more in- formation call 986-8888. So far 15 are regis- tered. “We think this program will motivate our students — the out- doors will energize them. It will create a good spirit and help their learning,’’ says Cleremont, an outdoors enthusiast and world- class athlete. Formerly a Quebec biathlon champion (cross-country skiing and shooting), she recently placed in the top 10 at the Worlds Masters Cup in Alaska for cross- country racing. She is also on the Canadian kayaking team for downriver whitewater racing. “I’ve always loved the outdoors and nature ... and we have such great opportunity to take advan- tage of it here (on the North Shore)’’ she says. She emphasized that the stu- dents will still get their regular studies such as math and science but the language arts will focus on themes that will take the students out and about. There are plans for an expedi- tion to Cultus Lake; 4 tour of Radio Canada; cross-country ski- ing at Hollyburn; hiking at Grouse Mountain and visits to the Capitano Fish Hatchery, the Seymour Demoastration forest and the Anthropology Museum. Students need not fear that the program will be too arduous for them. “In fact we think our students will develop more self-confidence and self-esteem as an acded bonus of participating in this pro- gram,’’ says Cleremont, who, as well as being a language arts teacher, is also a certified instruc- tor in cross-country skiiing, swimming and kayaking. “This is very much in the spirit of the Year 2000,’’ she says, re- ferring to the new approach to education which aims to bring it into the ’90s. Principal Peter Lefaivre agrees: “This is a very exciting program we have planned. We’re just hop- ing to get enough students. Last year there were not enough stu- dents, and the program had to be cancelled. But Lefaivre is optimistic this year. He points to the proven success of late immersion. “We are graduating our first group of fate immersion students this year,’’ he says. ‘And I have to tell you that they are achieving just as well and often better than the regular stu- dents,’ he said. “It’s an amazing thing to :e¢,”’ he added, ‘‘that after just one year of late immersion the stu- dents are speaking French well enough to integrate with some early immersion classes. And by Grade 10, the teachers find it very difficult to tell the difference be- tween late and early immersion students.”’ Anyone iaterested in finding out more about the program or regis- tering a student should contact Annie Bouchard at 922-3291.
