Athletes deserved mention Dear Editor: Re: ‘First-time competitor does well in Ironman’’ (Wednesday, Aug. 28). The writer of this article does not express any of the energy of the North Shore’s competitors in the recent Ironman competition. Not only did the writer not bother to find out and/or include the finishing times of the top North Shore women competitors, but she/he also mentions the women’s leading times last and, unlike the paragraph regarding the men’s leading times, abbreviates the former's race description to given times only. Any person, of any description, who simply finishes the Penticton MAILBOX Ironman deserves brief mention in the local newspaper. Maybe the writer should put on a pair of running shoes and pick up her/his pace. Katherine MacBean West Vancouver Editor's note: The North Shore News regrets that times of some North Shore Ironman competitors were not available by press time on Aug. 26. A director of the B.C. Triathlon Association gener- ously provided the News with the information she collected before her long drive home from Pentic- ton that night; understandably, she was not able to find, let alone Gov’ts have own orders of priority Dear Editor: Nosth Vancouver City Ald. Bell’s letier, (News, August 28), appears based on the assumption that the federal and provincial governments have an unlimited amount of money for funding programs at the municipal levei. Such is not the case, for with few exceptions, (customs duties, port fees, etc.), every dollar these gov- ernments have comes from the pocket of you and I, the taxpayer. The federal government, from our income tax, returns a share to the province, deducts salaries, overhead and administrative costs, and spends the rest. (Or borrows more!). It may choose to spend it on another muiti-million dollar survey of the Constitution, frigates in New Brunswick, pris- ons in Quebec, railways in Africa, or salaries and perks for Ed Broadbent and Stephen Lewis, leaving very little for local playground maintenance. This is their order of priority. The provincial government with its share from the federal, adds a few taxes of its own, and spends it on such items as medical care, hospitals, education, train trips to Prince George, rock concerts in Penticton, or highway inter- changes in North Vancouver, leav- ing very little for playground maintenance. This is their order of priority. The city government gets most of its income from property taxes, and uses it to provide local ser- vices for its citizens. At the same time it asks both the senior gov- ernments for additional money so that it can do more. When less or none is forthcom- ing, some of the ‘tmore"’ pfanning has to be reduced. When the city chooses to spend $10,000 to hire a consultant to do another study of Lower Lonsdale instead of using the money for playground maintenance, this is their order of priority. Until the three levels of gov- ernment agree on an order of pri- ority, the Canadian taxpayer is going to be bled to pay for items they neither need nor want. Changing the government, (Ald. Bell’s desire), is no different than me changing my pants. I°l! have no more money in the new pants than I had in the old, just a dif- ferent set of politicians spending it. Denald M.
