To many of us. water doesn'e
seer Hke @ big issue: after all,
we've got plenty of it. But the
way in which we treat our water
supply, whether by using it in hy-
droelectric dams or allowing its
contamination with toxic
substances, affects the very
balance of our eco-systeri.

We've all heard about the ongo-
ing battle against pulp mill pollu-
tants in Howe Sound, but it’s not
just big industry that does the
damage. There are many ways
regular folk can, and du. regularly
abuse Our water supply.

For example, just one litre of
oil from a do-it-yourselter oil
change poured into a storm drain
can contaminate up co two million
litres of water.

Toxic household cleaners should
be avoided — there are plenty of
recipes for homeniade alternatives
and an increasing number of safe
commercial products om the mar-
ket, As to the latter, however,
shop carefully — # once saw a
cleanser that was billed as
“green”? simply beeause it con-
tained sone noxious substance
that discouraged little people from
drinking it) when thes parents
weren't around.

According to Pollution Prabe,
**Phosphates are not hannful in
themselves; they are basic fertiliz-
ing agents tha: generally benefit
plant life. But the amounts of
Phosphates we have been adding
to the ecosystem are too much of
a@ good thing.”’

As a result of (itis Knowledge,
which we've been made aware of
over the past decades, phosphate
content in laundry detergents was
restricted tu five per cent in 1972
by the federal government.

Now, with the consumers de-
manding that products be gentler
on the environment, many brands
boast laundry detergent that is
phosphate-free, Howe ever,
automatic dishwasher detergents
— which are unregulated — have
been slow to follow.

Lever Brothers says this is
because phosphates are needed to
contro! water hardness and main-
tain dishwasher performance. The
company hus, however, nianagzed
to teduce its dishwater detergent
phosphate content to half that
found in most leading brands.
