Daffodils herald
arrival of spring

TRADITIONALLY, DAF-
FODILS mean large, yellow
flowers. From the popularity of
cultivars such as ‘Carlton,’ ‘Dutch
Master,’ ‘Yellow Sun’ and ‘Golden
Harvest,” it's plain that the public
preference for golden-hued,
large-cupped and trumpet Nar-
cissus (as they are properly called)
continues unabated.

In fact, ‘Carlton’ alone accounts
for more than half of all the cut
daffodils sold today.

Its popularity with growers lies
in its ability to be forced easily and
its consistently excellent quality
from December (when it is grown
in greenhouses) through spring.

In fact, in most parts of the
western world, if you buy a bunch
of daffodils, chances are nine out
of 10 that you will get one of those
— or perhaps ‘Ice Follies,’ an
unusual daffodil with a white
perianth (outer ring of petals) and
large cup that starts out light
yellow but which turns almost
white after it is open for a few
days.

Other varieties of Narcissus
which are sold in far more modest
quantities but score highly with
flower lovers, are the double daf-
fodils ‘Cheerfulness’ and ‘Dick
Wilden’ and the scented ones, call-
ed jonquils, like ‘Cragford.’

BUY THEM IN THE BUD

Professional growers always
harvest and sell daffodils while
they are still in the bud stage.
When purchasing cut flowers,
choose those that are still closed.
In this state, the flower is pro-
tected somewhat from damage
during the long route from
nursery, to flower auction, to
wholesaler, to retailer to you.

Furthermore, you then have a
cut flower which will last far
longer in the vase at home than
one which has already ‘sprung’

LARGE-CUPPED, YELLOW daffodils are a cheery, traditional symbol
of spring, and one of the most popular of that type is ‘Carlton’.

daffodils when the flower is still tightly inside the bud in order to have

them longer in bloom at home or at the office.

Open — as the growers call it. Oc-
casionally you may find a daffodil
that does not burst forth from its
protecting skin. Carefully slice it
open to release the bloom.

Cut daffodils can inhibit the
blooming of other flowers if com-
bined with them in the same vase
because of a fluid they secrete.
You can neutralize this somewhat
by first standing the daffodils for a
few hours in a bucket of water to
which a few drops of liquid
household bleach has been added.
Let them absorb lots of water and
do not re-cut the ends of the stem
before arranging them in a vase.
