Hiker airlifted from bluff A HIKER suffering from ar ankle injury as 2 result of a fall was airlifted from Eagle Bluff near Cypress Bowl Wednesday after- noon. The North Shore Rescue Team, West Vancouver Police and the B.C. Ambulance Service were called to assist West Vancouver res- ident Pauline Summers. Rescuers were alerted by one of two people hiking with Sum- mers. A helicopter transported the injured hiker to an ambulance waiting at the West Vancouver works yard on Cypress Bowl Road. Mian guilty of leaving accident A VANCOUVER man was found guilty in West Vancouver pro- vincial court Wednesday for impaired driving and failing to remain at the scene of an accident. The convictions stem from a Feb. 17 car accident at the north side of Lions Gate Bridge. West Vancouver Police were called to the scene at 9:42 p.m. When they arrived they found a 1988 Toyota pickup truck sitting on its roof and a 1970 Ford sitting nearby and facing south in the northbound lane. The Toyota driver had been travelling north to exit the bridge when the suspect's southbound vehicle lost contro! and struck the truck. While the accident resulted in no major injuries, the crash caused approximately $11,000 damage io the vehicles. Police attempted to locate the driver of the Ford, but found he had fled the scene before they arrived. The vehicle was impounded and the driver was identified and charged when he came to retrieve his car five days later. Dovglas Kenneth Schmidt, 28, was fined $500 for impaired driv- ing and $500 for failing to remain at the scene. Ring theft suspects arrested WEST VANCOUVER Police arrested two young offenders Mon- day who were wanted as suspects in a Dec. 9 Powell River jewelry store break, enter and theft. Thieves made off with 75 rings after an early-morning smash and grab at Peoples Jewellers in Powell River. Powell River RCMP alerted West Vancouver Police Dec. 12 to be on the lookout for a grey 1976 Camaro. Police believe the oc- cupants were selling the stofen rings. At 4:19 p.m. police checked a car at the Horseshoe Bay ferry terminal fitting the description of the suspect vehicle. Two 16- year-old Powell River youths were searched and arrested. Poiice recovered a gold ring worth $400. The two face charges of break, enter and theft, and possession of stolen property under $1,000. The remaining 74 stolen rings had not been recovered by police to press time. CounterAttack campaign launched POLICE THROUGHOUT 8.C. will check more than 400,000 vehicles during the Christmas CounterAttack road-check blitz. This year’s campaign runs to Jan. 3. Groups including ICBC, BC Transit, the Canadian Legion, the Lower Mainland Taxi Association, White Spot restaurants and the Canadian Armed Forces have joined with police to publicize the campaign. In conjunction with private sector and community support, the CounterAttack program will be distributing an additional 10 road check vans to police throughout B.C. between now and April 1. Baker re-elected to GVRD post NORTH Vancouver District Mayor Marilyn Baker has been re- elected vice-chairman uf the Greater Vancouver Regional District board of directors for her third term. Baker was re-elected to the post by acclamation at the recent in- augurat GVRD board of directors meeting. Richmond Mayor Gil Biair was re-elected chairman of the GVRD board, as were the representatives from the 18 municipalities that make up the GVRD. For the first time since the GVRD was established in 1967 there were no changes in the make-up of the board from the previous year.
