Man kiiled in fall A 39-YEAR-OLD Vancouver man died Thursday following an in- dustrial accident at Vancouver Wharves Ltd. in North Vancouver. Wayne Joseph Redhead fell to the ground at approximately 8:30 a.m. Thursday while being hoisted to a steel structure under con- struction at the bulk ¢erminal. He was rushed to Lions Gate Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The Workers’ Compensation Board and the coroner’s office are continuing an investigation into the incident. NV man jailed for UIC fraud A 28-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver man was sentenced to a 21-day jail term: in North Vancouver provincial court Oct. 20 for offences committed sgainst the Unemployment Insurance Act. Terry Stokes pleaded guilty to 23 counts of making false state- ments about his earnings in claiming for unemployment benefits for the period between Dec. 16, 1987 and Oct. 9, 1988. Appearing before Judge J.B. Paradis, Stokes was also put on probation for the duration of his jail sentence, which is to be serv- ed intermittently. Parrot smuggler to be sentenced A 35-YEAR-OLD North Vancouver painter will be sentenced Nov. 10 in Vancouver county court for smuggling parrots. Pleading guilty to one charge of conspiracy to smuggle, Robert Joha Ings was originally charged with six counts. In an undercover operation with U.S. authorities which fed to the charges, the RCMP customs and excise section bought a total of 21 Amazon parrots frem Ings for $5,000 in early 1987. lu February 1987, 17 parrots were seized from Ings’ home at 467 Prospect Road in North Vancouver. Nine of those birds were il- legally imported Military Macaws, marked by U.S. Fish and Wildlife four days earlier. The birds are smuggled in to aveid a 45-day quarantine period enforced by Agriculture Canada to prevent the transmission of disease. There is a Canada-wide bench warrant out for Ings’ co-accused, George Adam Pochlopek. Also involved in the parrot smuggling ring are Vancouver stock brokers, Spencer Torpy and Brent Hangerman who put up moncy for the importation of the parrots. Torpy and Hangerman were fined $1,000 each.
