Nurses reach tentative agreement; NEGOTIATORS for the Health Labour Relatiozs Association and ’ the 17,500-member B.C. Nurses’ Union reached a tentative con- tract agreement late Wednesday night, but the contenticus issues of wages and length of contract will be settled by smediator Vince Ready through binding arbitration. Details of the tentative agreement will not be released untit Ready issues his cecision. The teniative settleineut follows resumption of contract bargain- ing between ihe two sides after BCNU membership voted 65 per cent July 12 to reject a three-year agreeinent recommended by the union’s execative. HLRA president Gordon Austin said in a statement, ‘“The deci- sion to agree to have Mr. Ready conclude the agreement, we felt,. was & necessary move to prevent a further deterioration in patient care in B.C.”’ Pat Savage, BCNU president, said the unien’s bargaining com- mittee was left with the choice of accepting binding arbitration or submitting to a government-imposed settlement. New WV parks director named WEST Vancouver Municipal Manager Terry Lester announced recently that Kevisi Pike will be the municipality’s new director of parks and recreation. The 42-year-old Pike will succeed Frank Kurucz, who will retire this fall after 16 years with the municipality. Pike is currently the manager of central recreation services for the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation. North Shore Union Board of Health chairman Murray Dykeman said the name reflects the changes taking place within the organiza- ticn and North Shore community health.
