Tim Alguire never got many magic tricks as presents. Instead, he would use his allowance to buy them himself, slowly building his STEPHEN BARRINGTON feature writer collection with bigger and better effects. “Even with all the (top magic acts such as) David Copperfield and Harry Blackstone Jr. out there, people still say ‘But can you make a a iwing at it?’”’ explains North Vancouver magician Alguire, 27. “You can.” As a youngster he would perfect his magical techniques with his mother as the audience; effects were, of course, always greeted with hearty applause. In Alguire’s everyday life, how- ever, a coin might disappear as he is handing it to a bank teller. When he is around, unusual ob- jects have been known to mysteriously develop a loud squeak. Questions of how he makes a watermelon or leather binder squeak are dismissed with a shrug. tn true magician form, the answer is: it’s just a little thing he does. His favorite effect — trick is a dizty word — is with small sponge bunnies, that magically (that term again) disappear, multiply and reappear with gusto. “It’s not what you do, it’s how you do it,” explains Alguire, who bought the bunnies in a magic store for a few dollars.
