What the Epps of this country cannot get into their heads is that cialists in blue suits, the Tories. What excites me about them today is their desire to beat the NDP at its own game by spen- ding billions on day care, it no longer being fashionable to look after one’s own kids, it seems. What is this? Sweden? plain that the tax credits Oltliawa has in mind (for single mothers and others who should have known better than to have kids) will benefit only the rich. Yack yack yack. Health and Welfare Minister “Health and Welfare Minister Jake Epp has the audacity to describe this latest capitulation to the forces of the Left as ‘a significant new social initiative...’ “Get lost, Epp. You are Canada’s Sir Stafford Cripps. ’’ The program will cost about $5.4 billion over seven years, which ain’t hay. But do not believe it will stop there. Already, the NDP in skirts, meaning the tax-supported Status of Women and-similar fem pressure groups, is howling foul. f They’re being robbed, they “say. What we should spend is $11 { billion, and then some, they say. Gimme, gimme, gimme. And in the end the politicians give, because the parties vye with one another to be sucked into the black holes of socialism. (A study by a Toronto University pro- fessor, Jack Carr, puts the even- tual cost of a fully-funded day- care plan at $44.8 billion.) The Liberals are already yelling that $5 billion is peanuts. Get lost, Epp. You are Canada’s Sir. Stafford Cripps. Or, as Winston Churchill put it, Sir Stifford Crapps. And this lat- est slip of yours sits well with your attack on tobacco advertis- ing. Pretty soon, you will be wan- ting to ban liquor advertising, * too, and soon after that we'll be lucky if we can drink yogurt without someone from your of- fice telling us it clogs the lungs. It wouldn't surprise me, either, if we have to have a’ social worker with us every time we cross the street. Why not? They’re playing your song again. You know, “I wanna “new initiatives’’ are just as daft as provenly-stupid old initiatives. Like giving forcign vets Cana- dian service pensions; like throw- ing bitlions down the foreign aid drain; like providing dough for teaching Tibetan in Manitoba; like spending fortunes on phony refugees. Most of these things start small and end big, and eventually nei- ther the politicians who started them nor the people who have to pay for them can figure out how the hell it all happened. Only the other day, the politi- cians of Ontario couldn’t figure out how the welfare rolls were increasing even though that pro- vince is in the grip of prosperity. “Welfare rolls are rising in -booming Ontario,’’ was the headline. Since the Liberals came to power there two years ago, welfare costs have increased there by 22.5 per cent. Which is not surprising, Premier David Peter- son being a registered member of the Loony Left. You can’t blame the takers, Why work for little when you can geta lot for doing nothing? The same madness would app- ly in B.C. if Hurricane Harcourt were running things. Why did Epp introduce this day-care stuff? Because Brian Baloney went around promising everything to everyone during the last election, that’s why. Day care (now called child care because it sounds better and no one wants to be against looking | after children) was another of his sacred trusts, along with giving aid and comfort to the commies in Africa. Being backward, I will never figure out why it is that people are encouraged not to look after their own offspring. Did you ask them to have kids? Neither did I. Picture someone happy this Christmas.
