The college was hosting approximately 60 Grade 11 students from 14 high schools for the seventh annual Natural Sciences Enrichment Workshop. Each year the college invites top science students from local schools to the campus for a day to take part in advanced labs in chemistry, physics, biology and math/ computing science. This year’s participants came from the North Shore, Howe Sound, the Sunshine Coast, East Vancouver and North Burnaby. Students took two labs — one in the morning and one in the after- noon — and what they seemed to enjoy most was the chance to use up-to-date equipment and to operate it themselves. “It’s not just a demo,” explain- ed Sutherland student Lorenz Freiberg after taking the physics lab. ‘‘At school the teacher had one laser for the whole class and no one got to touch it. Here we can use them ourselves. It was a really exciting experience.’’ Karen Voon from St. Thomas Aquinas School also enjoyed the opportunity to work with advanc- ed facilities in the chemistry workshop. ‘‘It gives me an idea of what people do in university,” she said. Students in chemistry performed an organic synthesis of PABA M (para-amino benzoic acid) — the NEWS phe Stuart Davis, = sunscreen agent in suntan lotions. DR.
