EFFICIENT LIGHTING ALTHOUGH hghting typically accounts for oniy 12 to 1S per cent of the electricity used in a home, you can reduce your lighting energy costs substantially. One way is by using fluorescent lighting. Fluorescents give more light per watt of electricity than incandescent bulbs. You get the same light with fluorescent bulbs while using up to 65 per cent less energy. In addi- tion to saving energy, fluorescents are excellent where high level, even distribution light is needed such as in the kitchen, family room, hobby room, workshop, laundry and bath. You can save energy dollars by replacing incandescent fixtures with fluorescents. For example: replace a ceiling fixture that uses two 60 watt bulbs with a fluores- cent that uses two 20 watt tubes. You save about 80 watts (the fluorescent ballast uses a few watts) and get approximately the same light. ENERGY SAVINGS Fluorescent tubes cost more ini- tially, but could last you as long as 20 incandescent bulbs. The usual household incandescent *‘A’’ bulb is raied for a life of 750 to 1,000 hours while comparabic fluores- cents are rated up to 20,000 hours. In the long run, most fluorescent tubes cost less than incandescents, long life and durability along with energy savings will make it an easy choice. Many types of fluorescent tubes are available — and they all have a different effect on how colors look. For instance, cool white produces a cool light that is used mainly in offices and factories where color fidelity is not too im- portant. For many years, incandescent lighting has been the standard for color fidelity, but now some varieties of fluorescents come very close to this standard. So if you are using fluorescents where the color of flesh tones and the colors of the furniture are important — look for the new fluorescent tubes with improved color fidelity. While fluorescents are excellent for general lighting there are some places where incandescent lighting is more appropriate. Fluorescent tubes are larger than incandescent bulbs, they aren't practical for lighting small objects or aiming light at specific areas such as artwork, a reading chair or a sculpture. Aiso, fluorescents can be dimm- ed but a special ballast must be us- ed and fluorescent dimmers are BROILMASTER “Simply the Best’ Parts & Service for all makes Johnstones Home Appliances 165 Pemberton 985-9541 more expensive than those for in- candescents. Incandescent bulbs are much tch on ener smaHer and their light can be easily aimed, concentrated and dimmed.
