You find them where the doctors won't go."” In defending her statements, Laxton added: ‘1 am an innocent bystander. I comment by observing the situation.”” The other main problem facing nursing today is of course fi- nances, Laxton said. AWARD THRILLS Fewster said she was thrilled to receive her award: ‘‘It was a great surprise. There are so many nurses i RNABC Registrar Helen Grice...‘‘Nurses need to de proud and show their pride.”’ a & OY CANADIAN Nurses Association public representative Valerie Lax- ton...“‘I’m glad they have made an honest woman of me.”’ Aquaculture restricted LANDS Minister Jack Kempf an- nounced recently, that new aquaculture applications will not be accepted for Gambier Island and islands to the south in Howe Sound pending completion of an ongoing review. Applications now with the Ministry of Lands, Parks and Housing will be approved only if there is consensus between local government and neighbcring lan- downers. Kempf said: ‘'This policy is in recognition of the unique recre- ational values in that region of Howe Sound.”’ He said that applications now before the ministry for aquaculture operations on Keates Island will not be approved. The ministry is currently com- pleting a comprehensive study of aquaculture on the Sunshine Coast, which is expected to result in further policy statements this July. The Howe Sound restriction will remain in effect pending results of the study. that are excellent in nursing educa- tion that I felt particularly honored to be singled out."* Fewster, who has been with Douglas College since 1975 and director since 1981, has served nursing abroad as well as at home. She has assisted in developing nursing programs in a number of Caribbean countries as well as helping to develop their registered nurse exams. At home in Canada, Fewster has represented the RNABC at the Canadian level on the CNA regis- tered nurses exam committee. “Nursing education has been undergoing considerable changes," Fewster said. ‘I feel because of the increase in technology and the acuity of patients in hospitals that nurses require higher levels of training.” in fact one of the association's goals is to have every new nurse entering the hospitals to have a university degree by the year 2000. Stepping down with honor, Helen Grice, who was the first contact for most new or relocating nurses, said ‘*! was very pleased with the award because | was being honored by my peers and the membership.”’ She has only praise for B.C. nurses: ‘‘They are some of the best in Canada. they take a back seat to no one," Grice said. ‘Nurses need to be proud and show their pride.*’ While there have been a lot of changes over the years, ‘“‘there is one thing that hasn't changed,’ said Grice. ‘‘People still get sick.” And consequently she believes there is more of a place for nurses in the preventative health field. Once Grice hands over the regis- trar’s reigns to her successor she plans to do all those things she hasn’1 had time to do over the years, such as exercise, travel and play bridge, as well as keep in con- tact with the friends she has made in the profession.
