John Braithwaite condemned some of his fellow council members last week for harboring racial prejudice. The strong remarks came after the municipal council was tied in a vote to deciare the city an apartheid free zone. The split vote meant a defeat of the motion. This week, however, the motion was brought again to council and passed. Was the council’s decision affected by the name calling? No one likes to be called a bigot and Canadians especially have an aversion to the label. But even if we are strong and free, Canadians are racist; everyone harbors some prejudice. The extent of this prejudice in , our society is the question, and John Braithwaite’s ac- cusation suggests that it is alive and well locally. Boycotting South African products is more a moral condemnation than an economic sanction. The concept is not new except that it is now being applied on a local level instead of 2 national one. If council feels it can speed up the process of ending apartheid in South Africa by boycotting pro- ducts...bravo! But before council enters the realm of international politics perhaps it should take a closer ook at what is happening in its own backyard. Discrimination against native Indians and im- migrants is an issue that needs to be addressed as a serious problem across Canada, as well as right here at home, Before we cast the mote out of our brother’s eye, let’s remove the beam from our own. CYPRESS PARK FEES A lot to pay for now the approach to the Coast Dear Editor: Crest Trail is similarly barred. Barbara Fraser points out that four dollars is a small sum to pay for a day’s amusement on the Prepared cross-country runs in Cypress Provincial Park. Agreed. But what of those skiers, + snowshoers and hikers who do not want that kind of pleasure? Four dollars is surely exorbitant when it is exacted from those who want off groomed trails as soon as possible. How can one use the Baden- Powell Trail in the park? Within the ski areas, access is blocked at ‘each end even for those who have S. ___..-.__---hiked--in- via Brothers’ Creek:-And-> in’ ~Mounr— But the matter of principle, which Ms. Fraser does not address, is that Cypress is a Class A Pro- vincial Park and for that reason should be open to all. The trouble is that the Minister of Lands, Parks and Housing turned over certain areas to a private individual without public consultation and in so-doing failed to take into ac- count the different types of winter recreationists who use the park. It is significant — and I am sur- prised that it was not mentioned — that no such unpleasantness exists _ “Seymour” “Provincial is “OF, “ndcduracies,” ‘falseHoods slanderous” statements: Awhich THE VOICE OF NORTH AND mest VANCOUVER SUNDAY . With respect to Ms. Fraser’s comment that wilderness skiers may go to Diamond Head or elsewhere, such a suggestion makes impossible a quick trip into the mountains for a few hours, since the areas she mentions involve some two hours of touring time (one way). In effect, she is asking that a provincial park cater solely for one group of recreationists. That’s where the beef is. David Macaree “West Vancouver” SDA DIVEOtN _..Helga Doherty... Peter Speck . _. All tights reserved, Promote the city with enthusiasm Dear Editor: In the communications course I attend at Capilano College, we were assigned to give a five-minute talk. [ chose “A Day at Expo” as my topic. { had one week to complete it. My search for information began. I telephoned Expo for where © could find some material on the North Shore. They provided me with Ald. Deans’ phone number. I called and she told me to call Dorothy Rooke at city hall. Ms.-Rooke had some information so we agreed I could come by Friday lunch time. At one o’clock Friday I arrived, only to be told by Ms. Rooke she was going to lunch: Sorry.” I'm glad I wasn’t a tourist. It is hoped we could promote this city of ours with a bil more enthusiasm, I don’t think a few Expo pamphlets i is asking a lot. Needless to say I had to change my topic. North Vancouver
