New rules allow
beer store to open

OWNER of the Raven [nn in Deep Cove, Car-
relyn Banner, just opened a beer store inside her

pub one week ago.

That store is one of the
first half-dozen to open
“under new rules drafted this
summer by the B.C. Liquor
Distribution Branch.

But already Banner can
tell you what will make or
break one of the new beer
stores. And she'll be doing
just that at this weekend's
Meeting of the
Neighborhood Pub Owners’
Association.

Beer stores may only be
operated by a licensed hotel,
neighborhood or marine
pub, between 9 a.m and 11
p.m... They: can. stock only
B.C.-made products. .

owners, but Banner is bet-
ting that volume sales will
make the difference,

Banner lists a few basic
points that pub owners
thinking of opening a beer

liquor store and what are its

‘hours? (Banner expects a lot

of business after 6 p.m. on

' weekdays, when the Deep
. Cove liquor stores close and

the nearest open liquor
outlet is at Westview.)

Will the population of
your area support a_ beer
Store, Or are you too far off
the beaten track for people
to stop by on their way
home from work?

What is the volume of
your pub’s off sales? (The
Raven Inn currently does
about $10,000 to $15,000 per
month in off-sales. Banner
expects sales in her beer
store to top $50,000 per
month.)

How secure will the store
be? Do you really want glass
windows along the front that
will encourage break-ins?

Finally, says Banner, beer
store owners should
endeavor to make their

cigarettes, pop; and a take-
out pizza counter to her beer
store. .
