F OR ME, the worst part of travel is carrying He's got a raincoat even though the temperature never falls below 75F but if he leaves it home it rains for 21 days straight. He’s got a camera and case that weighs about 10 pounds. If ‘“the’’ is-a ‘‘she’’, she’s also got a big purse filled with essential items like a 600 page guidebook and a large bottle of hand lotion. Then there’s the satchel. Both travellers are scared to death their luggage will go astray so they’ve got all their toiletries, medications, a change of clothing, two 40- oz jugs of joy juice and 400 cigarettes. All that is hauled aboard the aircraft. In addition, each has forty pounds of suitcase ‘crammed with enough clothes to cover any situation. If that isn't bad enough, consider the return trip. By now, they’ve had to buy another satchel to hold 24 Venetian goblets, two bronze ashtrays and four pairs of shoes. Don't forget the duty-free. The first time I took a trip overseas I carried more burdens than a Mexican donkey and had ‘just about as much fun. It didn’t take too long to decide that if I couldn’t do any better than that I’d better stay home. Let’s look at some ways to . pare-down the baggage. The raincoat: If you're travelling off-season and you're sure the temperatures will be low enough so you can wear the thing-ail the time in comfort, bring it i along. If not, buy a plastic rain slicker that folds up to nothing. Don't even consider an umbrella - just get a slicker with a hood. A K- Way style jacket (with a hood) that folds into a pouch and can be worn around the waist is another alternative. The camera: If you’re not a real camera fiend (or a nut that writes travel columns) get yourself an instamatic- type and buy lots of postcards. If you must have heavy-duty equipment, pare it down. Do you need 10 ex- tra lenses? How often will you use flash equipment? Buy the lightest carrying case you can find, soft is better than rigid. For men, this is a good safe place to carry tickets, passports, travellers’ cheques and wallets. The purse: The first step is to check your wallet. Remove anything you won't need - local credit cards, thirty pictures of your kids, Canadian coins and odd bills and receipts. Transfer medications and cosmetics to light plastic containers. if you can’t live without hand lotion, try the smal! packets good for one shot. A good travel purse comes with a minimum of four separate zipper compart- ments. This cuts down on the chances of losing things and makes finding what you need a lot easier. The key word is miniature. The satchel: If you're go- ing to buy duty-free liquor and cigarettes, a satchel is essential. If not, do you real- ly need the extra baggage?
