40 - Wednesday, June 12, 1985 - North Shore News Sports PRSL PLANS TOUR Colts topple Celtics THOUGH THEY LOST their financial shirts in the process, the North Shore Colts won the B.C. Interna- tional soccer tournament Saturday night. By TIMOTHY RENSHAW In front of 9,500 fans, the Colts stymied Glasgow Celtic’s attack to beat the tournament favorites 2-1. Colts’ coach, Frank Pike says the club did what it set out to do: ‘‘We set up our defense in the way we knew the Scots would come at us and we were successful. We didn’t just win, the game, we beat them.”* Celtic outshot the local squad 25-5 and scored first with a goal by Mo J.:..nstone. Chris Chueden, who scored two goals Thursday night in Colts 3-2 victory over Ajax, tied the game. North Van- couver’s Jim Easton scored the winner on a breakaway with five minutes left in the game. Colts’ Chairman, Grant Johnstone, says his team’s victory in the tournament, “proves something about the character of the Colts and the quality of soccer in this area. I mean, most of the guys other jobs and practice twice a week. They’re not fulltime soccer players."* Financial wounds suffered by the Colts, who will lose close to half the $300,000 it cost the club to sponsor the three-day tournament, were shrugged off by Johnstone. “We'll just have to carry on and hope that local sup- port for the team increases.”* In the wake of dismal fan support for the B.C. Place tournament---total atten- dance for the three nights was just over 17,000---the Pacific Rim Soccer League (PRSL) is planning to sponsor a July tour of Scottish Premier Division Dundee United. Games are tentatively plan- ned for July 5 in Vancouver and July 6 in Victoria. A third game, to include the Colts, has yet to be finalized. PRSL director, Jim Easton Sr., says the Dundee tour will be a totally different format from the B.C. Place tourna- ment, but will be dedicated to the same principal of produc- ing “good football for the fans in this area."* Andy Fraser, PRSL public relations spokesman, says though the dates are still un- confirmed, the Dundee tour is definitely on. He adds that Promotion for it will be handled differently than the International tournament, “and we certainly won't be looking at the same kind of money.”’ As to why the league would initiate such a tour in the aftermath of the financially disasterous tournament, Fraser says “the players need to, and deserve to, play against the best. And also, the 40,000 kids playing the game should get the oppor- tunity to watch the best in the world.** Pointing to the Colts’ Sun- day night 2-0 victory over the Victoria Shooters, Pike says exposure to top international play is absolutely vital to the survival of the game in this area: ‘‘The players were still playing at the Ievel they were the night before. There is no question of whether we should continue to have in- ternational competition, we should and we must. It’s just a question of how it should be done." Next home game for the Colts will be 6 p.m. June 16 against the Burnaby Boomers.
