Photo submitted West Vancouver developer, M.A. Park wrong site for fountain Dear Editor: West Vancouver council's announced building of a 25 ft. high concrete lattice shell _ Don’t bow to fountain at Ambleside Park rasies broad questions of precedent, design, costs and choice of site. Choice of site however, is the point which in our opinion is most questionable. We hope these comments from impartial self-interest groups Tmembers-of-the public wilt inspire aldermen to give the gifts stipulation that Am- blieside Park is alone ac- ceptable as the site, some courageous second thoughts. It is unfortunate that our objections are raised post Your story in the March 2--facto,_._but-. important Dear Editor: edition about Alderman Sorenson's resignation is indeed a sad commentary on all concerned. This is a free country and a competitive one. I would ‘be very surprised if Mr. Sorenson's Board of Directors would not give him full support for his actions. He was, after all, acting as an elected member of council, not as an employee of NSCU and he believed his actions to be well motivated and directed towards the well being of the com- munity, not any self-interest group I would respectfully Suggest that Mr. Sorenson withdraw his = proposed resignation and = carry) on with what he conscientiously beheves to be meht. Let the voters decide if they support Mr. Sorenson's style of politics at the next election CUPE should do what they want with their money After all, itis theirs, and if the members don't hke i. they can change the leadership I they support (he move, fine and dandy happened There will always be self: interest groups and they will always usc whatever pressure they can to achieve then goals That is myht Bowing to them, on resigning is no way to the Community Mr ALE Miles Pa kup North Vane ouves Forget it ever Improve A eee e og municipal decisions made with little publicity and without public input are bound to drag behind them tax-payers’ vexatious contributions. Ambleside Not the Right Site Ambleside’s popularity rests on its essential “out looking "character. From its many cleverly Planned paths appear amazingly ~ diverse sweeping views: mountains, nver, ocean; lake; harbour, city; distant islands. In that wonderful natural setting, man-made “in looking structures (“Look at me! I'm a Work of Art!”) suffer by comparison, they are not only out of place and super fluous bul. by obstructing the yare, become oun welcome encroachments upon the remaining open- ness. In summary, we do not want to lose more of little Ambleside Park's green space to make way for the large concrete fountain, to do so would diminish the park’s out looking character. Suggestions on site selection From an artistic point of view also, Ambleside is an unsatisfactory choice as a fountain site; for, set against that park’s backdrop of natural water — features, an artificial cascade’s subtle charms would be _in- discernible. Donor, designer and council should recall that fountains are felicitously placed when set in eonjunction with buildings: a principle fruit- fully followed -fdr . several thousand years” since Babylonian times.
