C2 - Sunday, August 1, 1982 - North Shore News THINKING SLIM Proper eating on the road By JEAN NIDETCH Someone once said that North Amreica is filled with people who don't want to spend their vacations near home. And from the sight of the licence plates on the overcrowded highways, it seems to be true. But whether you plan a cruise to an exotic location or just a trek to a nearby beach cottage, there are a few points you should remember, if you don't wish to enlarge your waistline as well as your horizons. First of all, don’t take a vacation from weight control. Any momentary exhilaration you may feel as you throw dietary caution to the winds will be more than compensated for later in diet frustration. Instead, set yourself a definite goal, even if it's just to maintain your weight at a steady level while travelling, and then~-stick- with it. When planning your vacation, be realistic. Know your limitations and plan around them. Don't, for example, sign up for a bountiful cruise or a week in a resort famous for its cuisine unless you know you can handle this kind of temptation. If possible, plan your vacation around a physical activity — golf, for instance, or tennis, or water Spoi Plan a light breakfast and lunch when you have in mind a more elaborate ‘dinner. During your vacation, select restaurants carefully. In general, a_ traditional restaurant with a full menu is a better choice for the dieter than a _limited-menu or ethnic restaurant where everything may come fried in batter or smothered in a sauce of unknown com- position. If you eat at your hotel, let your waiter know your situation. The chef may be willing to stock up on skim milk or fresh fruit if he anticipates a demand for it. process of getting to your vacation spot can set the stage for diet success or Stressing Recognizing that the economic times are tough and that unemployment is rampant is one thing, but coming up with suggestions on how to handle the problem is something else. If traveling by air, call the airline early and ask for a low calorie in-flight meal. Most airlines that serve such meals will make provision for special dietary requests, if you let them know well ahead of time. If travelling by car, pack yourself an emergency snack kit in case meals are delayed or permissible food unavailable. In your kit include such non-perishables as canned tuna, shrimp or salmon and water-pack vegetables (don’t forget the can opener!), crackers, dried fruit, powdered milk and sweetener for coffee, and tea bags and bouillon cubes in case hot water is available at the service station or your motel. If you do stop for meals, try to persuade your travel companions to opt for a diner, where you may have a choice of chef's salad or diet plate, rather than a fast food place. A vacation is a time to relax your body, renew your mind and restore your spirit. It should leave you in- vigorated and ready to tackle the everyday chores of your life with new energy. Returning to your daily tasks without the burden of excess pounds to lose can help ensure that your vacation is all it should be — without that guilty aftertaste. the positive Newman, the two who operate Professional Sup- port Group, have made available for a small fee, one of their offices filled with typewriters and office equip- ment so that would be employees can keep up with their office skills while waiting for the job market to open up.
