Soup kitchens set up in Detroit WASHINGTON (UPI) - The United Auto Workers Union and Ford Motor Co. has asked for temporary relief from import com- petition for the U.S. auto industry to buy time to complete ifs conversion to small, fuel-efficent cars. In testimony prepared for the opening of hearings before the U.S. In- ternational Trade Com- mission, UAW president Douglas Fraser said: “The UAW is confident that if they (automakers) are allowed sufficient time to complete their massive programs to convert their plants, tooling, and auto designs for the production of small, higher miles per gallon cars, the four American manufacturers will by model year 1985 be able to compete effectively with imports.” Ford and the UAW have asked the UTC to find that foreign imports have caused “serious injury” to the U.S. auto New models easy on fuel OTTAWA (UPC) - New 1981-model cars consume an average 25 per cent less fuel than similar 1977 models, Transportation Minister Jean-Luc Pepin said today. A majority of Canadian- built models are also more fuel efficient than models built in the United States because Canadian exhaust emission standards are less stringent. “The average fuel con- sumption of new vehicles has improved significantly over the past few years,” Pepin said. “The projected average for 1981 cars is 9.4 litres per 100 kilometers. “This is an improvement of 25 per cent over the average of 12.6 litres per 100 kilometers when the Canadian voluntary fuel economy program began with 1977 model vehicles.” The Volkswagen — four- cylinder diesel Rabbit was ranked top on the federal scale, getting five htres per 100) kilometers while < 1396 Marine Drive, N V 988-3031 Reo 987 5965 Poererecder Etre IC FC Vil? Dealers who sell Datsuns, Hondas and Toyotas in this country, along with Japanese and European car manufacturers, are opposing the petitions. They say the domestic auto” industry's problems come not from inports but from the recession and its own failure to shift to making the kinds of cars the public wants. The five-member trade commission today began three days of hearings. While much of the country has experienced a recession, Fraser said conditions in auto-producing have rivalled those of the great Depression. “Soup kitchens and food giveaway programs have been set up in Detroit,” he said. “Many of our unem- ployed members spend their days standing in line to get free food for their families.” Fraser said auto industry unemployment rose to 351,400 in May and is now down to 241,500, but unless imports are limited will rise again toward 300,000. Both Ford and the UAW say US industry unem- ployment and profit losses by US manufacturers have come primarily from an increase in imports of Japanese cars. Both argue that Britain, France and other countries have been much tougher in holding down Japanese imports than has the United States. “The Japanese auto manufacturers have turned a deaf ear to every request that they exercise restraint during the American § in- dustry'’s time of peril,” Fraser said.
