Showdown set over Alberta oil OTTAWA (UPC) - Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and Alberta's Premier Peter Lougheed seem headed for a showdown over lhnkage of western oil prices to world levels for after two days of talks broke down. Energy ministers for the two jurisdictions, Merv Leitch for Alberta and Marc Lalonde for the federal government, broke off the talks Thursday afternoon but agreed to extend the current deal for one month until July 31. Trudeau and Lougheed will meet in the intenm to try and break the deadlock. The energy ministers gave assurances that no pce increases would be imposed during the one-month extension. However, the Alberta minister would not say if his province would seek lo raise prices on its own if Trudeau and Lougheed failed to reach an agreemtn by Aug. 1. Alberta had already “bent over backwards” and made “concession after concession” during negotiations that led to a tentative agreement with the former Conservative government last year, Leitch said. Trudeau has vehemently opposed world prices, saying they are determined by the OPEC cartel and = are unrealistic. Bail was set at $3,000 in North Van provincia! court for the four to reappear June 13. However, none of the four showed up. Police are privately ex- pressing frustration at having had the suspects slip through their fingers and are won- dering about the advisability of them having been granted bail. In the past, pyramid organizers had previously disappeared each time they had been tracked down by police im a number of major U.S. urban centres. But police are also voicing satisfaction at having ap- parently shut down the scheme in its early stages before reaching the level m Califorma where thousands of people were calling to complain that they had cach been duped out of $1,000. The problem compounds as organizers at the top start other pyramids as soon as they have collected their 16,000 and thousands of people are left supporting the pyramid at their own expense. An officer involved in the investigation told the News: “We have arrested most of the American players but they've all fled, except one in Vancouver who was not given bail.” On the question of them being granted bail, even at $3,000, he said: “They come up here and make literally thousands of dollars and when they get caught they just sphit. “It's obvious the fetiows are up here on an illegal con and will just go.
