42 ~ Wednesday, August 14, 1991 - North Shore News BUSINESS BRIEFS Surj RUSH HOUR RUSH HOUR, an often frustrating experience shared by most people five days a week, is now a new board game. “Congestion and the comic an- tics of work-bound drivers is the natural setting for the game,"* said North Vancouver native Tony Repaz, a pattrer in the company that is marketing the game. ‘‘1t is the best time I have ever had in rush hour. It's a fun game and we are proud it’s made in B.C.”” Local rush hour experts formed Rush Hour Enterprises Ltd. marketing ‘Rush Hour, The Orig- inal Doodle Game"’, which is the brain child of Surrey residents Mike Tomilinson and Sig Hup- fauf, On the way to work at a con- struction site at the University of B.C, in 1989, Hupfaul spitled his coffee, which started a car pool discussion about a rush hour game. The game makes its debut two years later at this year’s Pacific National Exhibition in the Showmart building. “It’s based upon common situ- ations and it’s funny no one had already invented the game. It’s not a copy of any other game aid we've played it to check it out,’’ said H=upfauf. The game was also given to other people to play and some changes were made because of the tests and feedback the inventors teceived. Rush Hour takes -about 45 minutes to play, about the time some people take to get home from work. Players are forced to make decisions and judgement calls. ‘*Everyone wants to be police officer Harvey Davidson because he’s a major player, in control, Girecting traffic and making judgement calls,’’ said Hupfauf. For more information on the game, call Hupfauf at 594-4274, CRANE CONTRACT THE VANCOUVER Port Corp. (VFC) has awarded a $6.7 million contract for a_ state-of-the-art crane for the Centerm container contract. Shanghai Port Machinery Plant was the lowest qualified bidder. following an open tender process which attracted nine bidders from around the world. The VPC’s specifications are expected to place the new crane at the leading edge of container handling equipment in North America. It will be high-speed, computerized and will include a special heavy-lift feature. The Shanghai company’s bid provides for more than 51% Ca- nadian content, including various structural, mechanical and elec- trical components, most of the project’s management and the en- tire erection program which will be carried out at the Centerm site. Prior to the award of the con- tract, a detailed pre-qualification process was undertaken by the VPC to evaluate the capabilities of the four lowest tenders to meet contract fequirements. All four qualified and the contract was subsequently awarded to the bid- der offering the lowest price. Currently equipped with a total of seven cranes, Centerm and Vaunterm handle the major portion of the container business in the Port of Vancouver. The container sector has posted a growth rate of 8% during the first five months of i BUSINESS BRIEFS The new Centerm cizane is ex- pected to be in operation in the spring of 1993, COMPUTER PROJECTS THE B.C. New projects start each September and January but are accepted anytime, subject to a brief evaluation. Once accepted, the project is placed on a list from which students can choose. Students generally work in groups of four with a BCIT facul- ty member as an advisor. There is no charge for the labor but clients may be required to purchase cer- tain software packages in order to use the software developed by the students. To help defray the cost of sta- tionery, copying and computer supplics, a one-time fee of $100 per project is charged For more information, call Hans Hoist at BCIT at 434-5734, local 5786.
