Mayor Loucks set for third decade in seat By lan Noble News Reporter ONLY one member of the present North Vancouver City council is still deciding whether to run in November’s municipal elections. The rest will once again toss their fedoras to the elec- toral winds. Bill Bell, the only council member to vote against a bylaw prohibiting video lottery terminals in the city, said he’s still in the decision-making process. Family and work comn ments have to be taken into consideration, said the father of four and owner of a public relations firm. “I fove being on council, but it is very time-consuming,” said Bell, who worked as an NDP strategist during the recent provincial election cam- paign. Other council! members, from Mayor Jack Loucks on down, told the News they will run, [If Loucks wins a new term as mayor, he will embark on his third decade in the office. “I enjoy it,” he said. “it’s a constant challenge.” John Braithwaite is another longtime council member who will make a stab at re-election. 17 years under his belt, a year term will see him hit the lofty 20-year plateau as well. Coun. Stella Jo Dean is looking to keep her promise to herself'to serve the city’s citi- zens for 25 years. With 24 years of experience, another term is needed to reach her goal. Barbara Perrault, who moved to the district: during the present three-vear_ term, said she lived in the city for more than 30 years, su that’s where shell run “I know the city very well and T think it would be a lial hypocritical of me to run in the district when T have spent most of my life in the city,” she said. She cited the number of shared programs and costs between the district and city when she said her resid shouldn’t be an issue in th campaign. Darrell Mussatto will seek his second term as.a councillor, while Barbara Sharp will try for another term as well. The city will begin accept- ing official candidate applica- tions for counci] and mayor Oct. 1. Gun suspect caught on the run A Capilzno mall shopper had her purse taken on Wednesday by a man brandishing a hand- gun. . Immediately. after the | p.m. armed robbery, the woman: approiched a police officer’in the mall, according to a North Vancouver RCMP spokesman. The officer radioed for more police. The officers were helped by mall security guards. Guards spotted a man matching the suspect’s de- scription running east on Marine Drive. The man was arrested near the corner of Fell Avenue and Marine. Police say he possessed a replica, semi-automatic handgun and a knife. Charges are pending against a 27-year- old man of no fixed address. Stool smasher heiped A 40-year-old) North Vancouver man was ordered to “partake and complete” aicohol counselling after he pleaded guilty to smashing a bar stool at Jack Lonsdale’s Pub in North Vancouver. Murray Shawn Blanchard pleaded guilty ta the mi chief charge stemming from a May 20 incident. North Vancouver provin- cial court Judge Jerome Paradis placed Bianchard on nine months’ probation dur- ing sentencing last month.
