tata, Dear Editor: “Car ownership in the regional district (GVRD) is growing twice as fast as the population” — /n Our Backyard by Peggy Trendell- Whittaker, 1992, Accommodating the car since the Second World War has been a terrible expense to governments, and one that keeps increasing. ‘In the GVRD, alone, motor vehi- cles \are subsidized to the tune of $2,400 to $2,600 each, per year. An affluent four-car family is subsidized by municipal taxpayers approximately $10,000 each year. Our economy in North America is fuelled by the auto industry. On the other hand, government deficits are out of contro! on this continent. This could be due in part to the astronomical costs of accommodat- ing the growing car population that is being driven relentlessly everyday which means more lanes; new, wider bridges and tunnels. As long as driving habits go unchecked, the demand of motorists can never be met and deficits keep mounting. Car addiction is out of control. Far too few are using alternatives. Only necessary repairs would be needed to Lions Gate Bridge, for example, if West Van motorists made less trips over it. West Van's Westmount park-and- ride facility is almost always empty. The British Properties is badly served by transit. Do the residents complain? No. Obviously for the well-to-do, the leaders: of society, public transit is very unfashionable. In this time of government eco- nomic crisis, the mindless demand to drive all the time is totally irre- sponsible. I's like smokers demanding to smoke all the time, everywhere, An issue of life and death Dear Editor: Abortion is a life and death -issue. The spark of Jife is infused into the cell at the moment of con- ception as are all the characteristics and physical features of the adult person. . Since itis impossible for a union of man and woman to create any- thing other than another person, but for-the passage of time that deter- mines the age and stage of develop- ment, there can be little or no differ- ence between the termination of a pregnancy and the taking of the life of any child or adult. { would suggest to Meredith Reid and others that they Jook at some of the ultrasonic irnages taken of developing babies, or better still find a way of examining the litter of discharge from an abortuary to see for themselves just how much of the living person is torn asunder or scalded through the process of ter- minating pregnancy. This visible evidence will speak louder than words. P. Certified #50222 when we all know that smoking pre- sents health hazards. A critical finger should not only be pointed at smokers, it should also be pointed at addicted motorists who pollute and congest our cities because they lack the will to reduce driving and use alternatives. Urban parents who encourage their children to be socially respon- sible should teach them some con- trol in the use of cars and. not have them become part of another gener- ation of addicts who think it's cool to drive everyday ‘to school today, and everyday to work tomorrow. No one living in a city should be personally dependent on a car. That's not what cities are about. Cities are ubout proximity which includes proximity to public transit.
