Kasy to shop for tots Home-based businesses capitalize on kidswear A NEW collection of Vancou- ver designer clothes called WOW Kidswear makes it easy to shop for your tots when they are underfoot. By Carol Crenna Contributing Writer You no longer have to drag them out to a mall or a crowded Store, hoping they will remain con- tent for the length of time it takes - you to grab a‘ few basics. WOW lets you browse a cata- logue and shop through a private studio in your area or through home parties. The Canadian-made clothes are sized for infants to preteens in qual- ity fabrics at reasonable prices. (Since it is not sold through stores, no middle man is required.) WOW is a division of Leigh Morgan Fashions, a nine-year-old Vancouver-based manufacturer that sells its merchandise through direct fashion marketing. The company owes its success to the trend toward a more person- alized approach to shopping in a convenient location and leisurely atmosphere. WOW is designed by Marilyn Wohl, who also design for Leigh Morgan ladies’ wear. Wohl has three children under the age of cight who wear-test the designs and tell her their prefer- ences. She uses “adult”-quality fabrics and specially dyed buttons and trims which can be found on high- er-priced lines. Additions such as double knees and multi-needle stitching adds durability. Its summer "94 collection is col- orful, comfortable and cool, styied in sporty plaids and stripes, soft pastels and lace which are teamed with unisex separates in cotton, twill and denim. WOW offers cotton/spandex tank unitards; striped, hooded shirts: graphic, sleeveless blouses with big collars; chambray “West” dresses, chambray shorts with accenting cuff and pocket, cotton piqué jacket, tiny sports jerseys and coveralls, Every outfit has matching sun- glasses, scrunchies and baseball caps. Kidswear promotes moms At a time when women seldom get much deserved support for being stay-at-home moms, a chil- dren’s wear company has based its successful business on it. The Clown Group Kidswear is a design and manufacturing firm which involves a network of 12 home-based businesses owned by mothers who work while taking care of their children. The Clown Group, located in Coquitlam, is in its sixth year of operation and has been active as a cottage industry on the North Shore for a year. North Shore women help to design, cut, sew, prewash, press and sell the pure cotton clothes. The easy-care clothes are made from Hoffman prints, imported from Brazil, which mix and match in jersey, denim, fleece, ribbing and twill. They are easy to clean and need no ironing. The garments feature five-thread seams for durability and details including zippered crotches, wide elastic waists and double knees on pants. All pants have “grow” cuffs and tops have drop shoulders to allow for longer wear. The Clown Group line is sold through home presentations, private showings and phone orders. Items offered for fall include reversible pants, $35.99; double- knee jeans for tots, $23.99; and cor- duroy jumpers with bodice ruffle, $29.99 to $32.99 Fabric patterns include Country Farm, Flying Pigs, Blue Arctic, Adias print, Cowboy Dino, Kids Club, Fruits and Animals, Cats, Cows and Graffiti.
