Brothers in speed

WEST VANCOUVER brothers
David and Kristopher Rutledge
are working their way up the rac-
ing ladder.

Currently, both brothers are
competing in the Westwood
Karting Association’s summer
racing season.

Both will be competing at this
weckend’s Westwood Gold Cup
races in Abbotsford.

Nine-year-cld Kristopher
joined his older brother at the
North American Grand Nationals

in Buffalo last year and that expe-
rience is reaping dividends this
season.

Kristopher leads his series-
class, and is currently third in
Gold Cup points.

The third member of the team,
their father Don, gets to tow their
kart and equipment trailer from
race to race,

The specialized racing karts
are capable of reaching speeds of
135 km-h (85 m.p.h.).

ABS brakes can’t be beaten

THE RAIN has been falling all day
and by rush hour the freeway is
very wet and slippery, Drivers may
have just a fraction of a second to
react if another vehicle skids out of
control,

Some experts say that the and-
lock brake system (ABS) is a safety
device that could prevent [5% or
more of all accidents, Skids are
caused when one or more tires lose
grip on the road and lock up (stop
spinning).

A good driver reacts by pump-
ing the brakes until the wheels
regain their grip. ABS does the
same thing — only better,

When the driver of a vehicle
with ABS hits the brakes, the car's
ABS computer automatically
detects which tires are locking up
and pumps the brake pressure only
to those troublesome wheels. -

If no problem occurs with the
other wheels, ABS will maintain
steady pressure on them.
