of seven tineways and the
enclosure of adjacent ditches,

The construction projects
approved Aug. 22 will be complel-
ed over the next several years.

Residential and business owners:

benefiting from or abutting the
improvements will pay about
$172,500.

The fanes to be paved include:
north of East l6t, Street bounded
by Sutherland and William
avenues, north of East [4th Street
bounded by Sutherhind and
William, north of East 16th Street
bounded by William and Rufus
avenues, and west of Westview
Drive between Larson Road and
West 19th Street. The other lanes
are: north of West 23rd Street
bounded by Larson and Jones
Avenues, north of East 9th Street
bounded by Moody Avenue and
West Grand Boulevard, and north
of East Sth Street between
Sutherland and Hendry Avenues.

Drowning sense saves cents

APPROXIMATELY 150 PEOPLE
drown and even more sufter from
near drownings in B.C. and the
Yukon every year.

The victims leave behind untold
costs in the form of human and
emotional pain, medical expenses
and lost tine and productivity.

The direct financial costs ussoci-
ated with hospitalization due to
drownings and near drownings cost
Canadian taxpayers approximately
$675 million per year.

In-order to reduce the number of
drownings and near drownings, The
Canadian Red Cross Society and
Royal Life Saving Society Canada
(RLSSC) have become partners in a
public education campaign aimed at
reducing water-related fatalities.
Each year, the two societies produce
annual reports with compiled statis-
tics on drownings in Canada.
