First off, their rehearsal home
Arcadian. Hall was
destroyed by fire at Christmas-
time. The resulting flood hit the
company’s storage area, putting
at risk costumes, props, electron-
ic equipment and archival mate-

‘rials commemorating 15 years in

the performing arts. And then
there were the North Shore Arts
Commission’s rejections of the
company’s grant appeal, despite
the fact that it has been working
and performing in the area for 15
years.

So when Park Royal Shopping
Centre agreed to supply the
ensemble with a free storefront
space in which to rehearse its
new interdisciplinary perfor-
mance piece, States of Grace, the
company felt suddenly blessed.

“It's been a godsend,” said
artistic director Judith Marcuse.
“It's saved our lives.”

A board member who had a

personal connection with Park ,

Royal’s administration made the
request, and, miraculously, the
troupe got the space for the 12
weeks it needed for rehearsals.
“t's a very valuable retail space,”
Marcuse noted. “They didn't
charge us any rent at all.”
