PARK ROYAL REVITALIZATION Work on mall near completion THE NEW construction at Park Royal's North and South malls is nearing completion. The project, worth approxi- mately $23 million, dates back to 1990. Additions and reconfigura- tions have tranformed Canada’s oldest shopping mall into one of its newest. But several design-related issues remain unresolved, At the Mon- day, May t7, meeting of West Vancouver District Council, coun- cillors Rod Day and Andy Danyliu of the Planning and Land Use Committee decided to meet with representatives of the West Vancouver Advisory Design Panel and mall owners Larco Invest- inents to iron them oul. Council considered Monday whether canopies at the front of the mall buildings should be made of clear glass or colored vinyl, Although Larco architect Al Waisman felt that the colored vinyl! added a richness to the broad expanses of concrete and glass, some members of the design pane! thought the clear glass gave amore sparkling effect. Design panel chair Kark Cystayon was concerned that a “patchwork’’ of colored vinyl would define the building facades, if cach individual merchant was permitted to insist on his or her company’s traditional color or personal favorite. a’ meee, WEST VANCOUVER DISTRICT COUNCIL by Maureen Curtis A cacophony of color is already in evidence with the emergence of burgundy, orange and navy design elements. Waisman felt that four colors should be made availabie for mer- chants to chose from. The design panel, in its role as watchdog over the tasteful and understated ambience expected in West Vancouver, has attempted to be vigilant about colors, signs and logos. Larco, meanwhile, has been at- tempting to bring Park Royal up to date with less enyphasis on vis! ble expanses of parking and more emphasis on store fronts. But many merchants are re- questing permission to put up corporate Jogo signs at the second storey, where signs are not usually allowed in West Vancouver. Businesses are restricted to an 18-inch (46-crn) band at the top of the first storey. Oak trees will be planted along Marine Drive in the fall. Mayor Mark Suger expressed some concerns about the new di- rectional signage that is being placed to assist people in navigating the reconfigured byways of the mall, ‘Lets’ make sure they don’t in- terfere with site lines,’ Sager said.
