In the 1950s,. traffic volume
began stretching the limits of
B.C.’s. existing two-lane urban
road system. ‘‘Multi-lane’’ con-
struction began as older roads
were updated and new stretches of
highway built.

The - section of the Trans-
Canada Highway between
Taylor Way in West Vancouver
and the Second Narrows Bridge
was opened in the late ’50s, and
almost immediately discussions of
a bridge diverting Westview Drive
traffic over the super-highway
began.

rows to Taylor. Way are better —

Lonsdale and Highway No. 1} was
completed in 1990 — but recent
rumblings out of Victoria threaten
to delay the. interchange at

Westview Drive. .

Last week, B.C.’s minister of
highways and transportation Art
Charbonneau announced plans to
revamp, or replace, the Lions
Gate Bridge. Minimum cost for an
updated span at the first-narrows
crossing is $86 million.

During the latter part of the
1980s, it seemed the political will

construction of the Westview In-
terchange. Public meetings were
held for residents near the inter-
change, and in early 1991, the
