the Clearly Canadian J1
series, winning two gold
medals at the Mt. Seymour
stop on the tour. Hartley is
perfect on the season, having
won all six events so far this
year.

Freestyle skiing... North
Shore athletes bumped and
jumped their way to medal-
earning results on a_ very
tough mogul course in the
B.C.-Alberta [{nterprovincial
.Freestyle Competition at
Blackcomb Mountain recent-
ly. The event was held on Da
Kine, one of Blackcomb’s
steepest mogul runs. Despite
the difficult course, North
Shore athletes proved they are
among the best skiers in
Western Canada. Jason
Smith, 17, of Lions Bay, won
a silver medal in the men's
event with a score of 22.76,
Gien Mittendorfer, 20, of
Deep Cove finished a close
third in the men’s event, with
a score of 22.75.. Kevan
Kobayashi, also from Deep
Cove, entered the finals in
second position but fell at the
end of the course and finish-
ed in 19th spot. Kelly
Ringstad, 18, of Lynn Valley,
won a silver in the women’s
moguls . despite .a sprained
knee. “‘This was the toughest
course I’ve skied all year but
I liked it. Now. I’m psyched
for the. next competition,”’
Ringstad said following her
performance. Amateur
freestyle skiers next compete
at Fortress Mountain, Alberta
where they. race for an oppor-
tunity to compete in the Ca-
nadian senior national event.

on Grouse Mountain. The en- _

must be 19 or older to com-
pete. Earlier in the day, the

kicks off:at 10 a.m. On Sun-
day, March 7, the competi-
tion resumes. at 1 p.m. with
the award ceremony sched-
|. uled for 4:30 p.m.

Andre Daigle (pronounced ‘‘Daig’’) will be the first player
snapped up in the annual NHL amateur draft June 26 in

Quebec City.

And the good news is the
youngster has already gone on re-
cord to say he won’t be pulling an
Eric Lindros-like holdout.

“Pll go wherever I’m drafted,”
Daigle said. ‘‘Sure, P'd prefer to
be with a team based in the Unit-
ed States because of the tax ad-
vantages but it’s out of my
hands.”’

At the moment, the San Jase
Sharks are competing with the Ot-

tawa Senators for the worst record’

of this 1992-93 season.

Daigle had 108 points (37 goals,
71 assists) in his first 37 games
with his Quebec Junior League
team...

NHL governors, incidentally,
are investigating the possibility of
conducting the first two rounds of
this year’s draft the night before
the June 26 proceedings with an
eye towards prime-time television
exposure.

A move is in the warks to offer
the Friday night programming to
an informal network of cable
channels that would include
ESPN, SportsChannel American
and Prime Ticket.

“The question is,’? said NHL
director of broadcasting Skip
Prince, ‘‘whether or not the
Ainerican market is ready for it.”’

matter which datés finally fall into
