Sue Foley — Young Girl Blues, Antone’s Records & Tapes 1992 Young she is at a mere 23. The raggedy wailing chops she squeezes from the strings of her guitar are certainly the blues like nobody's business. The debut is a smartly straight- ahead combination of original numbers and better-known blues workouts like Queen Bee and But | Forgive You. The unusual jux- taposition of small high voice with a big low-and-dirty guitar sound seals Foley’s success. Archie Roach —.Charcoal Lane, Hightone Records 1992 When so much new music relies on pose-of-the-moment attitude it is a rare and striking occasion when a listener discovers an artist like Roach. The shiver of recogni- tion just doesn’t happen that often. An Australian aboriginal singer- songwriter, Roach knows of what he speaks when he chronicles the oppression and cultural destruc- tion cf his people in the aftermath of contact with an alien and col- onizing culture. And yet he does not wallop us about the head with tedious righteousness. Once homeless and alcoholic hirnself, Roach manages what all of the best folk writers do: present frank stories of personal struggle. In the telling the fistener is granted insight. The intensely per- sonal journey reveals basic uni- versal wisdom about the collective lot of us. The cumulative effect of Roach’s basic country-biues song struc- tures, his smoky voice and the tell- ing truths about racism and ecological degradation, is curious- ly uplifting. There is bright spiritual MARSANNE — CHATEAU TAHBILK 1988. $12.95 (AUSTRALIA) The Marsanne grape is put to all sorts of unspeakable purposes in its native Rhone, but it’s also the grape used to produce the rare and distinguished white Hermit- age, said to be the equal of the famous red for elegance and stay- ing power. Always ones to take a dare, the Aussies have used it to make a wine that’s probably the equal of the fabled Hermitage at a fifth the price. This is a dense, austere wine with the metallic sternness of a Grand Cru Chablis. Her Majesty and Prince Philip often serve it in memory of their Australian honeymoon, and the Lady of Buckingham Palace is reputed to know a bargain when she sees one. Remember: the first toast is ‘The Queen.” SANGRE DE TORO — TOR- RES. $8.95 (SPAIN) You remember: the wine you could always find by the little plastic bull dangling from the cap- sule. Brian Lynch chato CANADA'S-OWN Sue Foley takes an extended blues tour of the deep south. Miller-Van Morrison drummer Gary Mallaber and quirky lead guitarist Michael Den Elzen (also of Australia’s Birdbrain and Schnell-Fenster) spark off each other well. Case pounds piano with gusto and writes funny lines, too. strength to be drawn from the dark side of suffering. Paul Kelly produces; his guitarist Steve Connolly contributes; Tim and Nei} Finn make guest appear- ances. Peter Case ~ Six-Pack of Love, The David Geffen Company 1992 Case came out of nowhere for me, but this disc makes for an easy convert to the Case clique. Mitchell Froom, who in the past has produced Costello, Crowded House and Richard Thompson projects, co-produced Six-Pack with Case. The follow-up to 1989's The Man With The Blue Postmodern Fragmented Neo-Traditionalist Guitar sees a riff-rollicking band backing Case. Elvis Costello and the Attractions bass player Bruce Thomas, Steve The last time you drank this some guy was trying to kiss the sky and the neighbors invited the RCMP. Sixty-five per cent Garnacha tGrenache) leavened with Carinena, this wine is always drinkable now for fans of big red with backlashes of pepper. cedar and chewed leather. Often written off as just a party wine, this wine is a dark horse. A bottle of the 1975, forgotten ina basement for 10 years, simply knocked the labels off $25 to $30 Chateauneuf-du-Papes.
