28 - Friday, May 22, 1992 - North Shore News Long weekend campaign targeted speeders Ken Hardie ICBC: AUTOTOPIC SOME B.C. motorists may have noticed extra police on the highways during the Victoria Day long weekend. Others may have found out the hard way that officers were out on a concentrated blitz to cut down on speeding. This campaign was the first of several long weekend campaigns police and ICBC will sponsor over the next few months. Police officers would rather pass out one of those stiff new fines and three points than mop up after a crash. Better yet, they’d prefer to see us make our destina- tions accident- and ticket-free. That’s the reason we're tipping you off about plans for stepped- up enforcement. People speed for different reasons. Younger males like to drive fast and have (by their reckoning) perfectly good reasons for doing so. A speeding ticket now and then is something they seem prepared to accept. in focus groups, their girlfriends admit they have a “thing”? about being seen in a car pulled over by the police. They also suggest that a major relation- ship crisis can occur if the Super- intendent of Motor Vehicles pulls a boyfriend's license. While some motorists ra- tionalize their speeding, others don’t even realize they’re doing it. Through fatigue or a lack of at- tention they blunder on until they have that heart-stopping experi- ence of a near-miss or an officer jumping out and waving them over to the side of the road. Either way, catastrophic results are much more likely than most people realize. In 1990, the police cited speeding as part or all of the reason for 5,592 motorists being involved in crashes resulting in in- juries or fatalities. A five-year study of B.C. traf- fic mishaps illustrated the perils Cellular co. makes name change B.C. CELLULAR has changed its name and signature to BC TEL Mo- bility Cellular, highlighting its ties with its parent com- pany and strengthening its national ties to the high- growth wireless communica- tions products and_ services offered by many Canadian telephone company sub- Sidiaries, including the recently renamed Bell Mo- bility. As part of its customer-focused strategic _ renewal, drawing all of its various -resources and subsidiary com- panies — including B.C. Cellular — under one signature. B.C. Cellular’s sister company, B.C. Mobile, is also coming under the Mobility banner, with a name T BC TEL is. change to BC TEL Mobility Pag- ing. B.C. Mobile runs the pro- vince-wide paging operations of PageCall and National Pagette in British Columbia. ‘*Wireless technologies, such as cellular and paging, are playing an increasingly important role in the future of telecommunications — changing the way people perceive communications,’’ says Fares F. Salloum, vice-president, BC TEL’s Emeiging Business division. : *“*At BC TEL we recognize the strategic value of the wireless - portfolio to our role in a com- petitive marketplace. We are building on the strengths of our competitive cellular and paging businesses, under the MOBILITY banner, as we position ouselves for success in the giobal telecom- munications marketplace,’ he adds. ‘*The high-growth wireless portfolio will continue to expand as new wireless technologies such as microcellular and digital cord- less are developed in response to customer demand for personal communications,’ says Salloum. The addition of MOBILITY will also take advantage of a na- tional trend toward using the word MOBILITY by the wireless . divisions of wireline carriers across the country. “In fact, Bell Cellular has just announced its name change to Bell MOBILITY. The MOBILITY signature will strengthen. our na- tional ties and further improve our competitive edge,’’ says Salloum. ; Throughout the summer the companies will begin to display transitional logos at events and in advertising, establishing the con- nection between established and new names. By September the transformation {is expected to be complete. faced by those who speed. The study compared the driving re- cords of two groups — a smail one made up of motorists who had caused two or more crashes resuiting in injuries or fatalities and a larger accident-free group. Those who caused mishaps had, between them, four times the number of speeding convictions than the much larger group. That’s why there is so much in- terest in the speeding issue, and why ICBC and the police hope the upcoming long-weekend cam- paigns make a difference in our driving habits. 10 - 2 Saturday ICBC COLLISION & RUST "HURRY DOWN TODAY SO YOU DON'T MISS THE.
