By Barbara Black News Reporter The North Shore Gardens Con- test Committee has been swamped with nominations for its first ever Block Beautiful Awards ‘91, The contest is to encourage civic pride and to recognize the efforts of our neighbors who contribute to the beauty of North Shore neighborhoods. The deadline for nominations was July 31. “It’s a great response for the first time,’’ says coordinator Rete McKay enthusiastically who, along with many civic beautification will be pounding evaluate the representatives, the pavement to nominated blocks. Close to 50 nominations came in for beautiful blocks from Caulfeild to Deep Cove, repre- senting a good cross-section of the North Shore. ‘it’s very well diversified between the three municipalities,’’ says McKay. Each home on the nominated block will receive a letter notifying residents that their street has been nominated and informing them when the committee will be visiting to assess their block. With so many nominations, volunteers have their work cut out for them, consulting criss-cross directories to assure they reach all Block Beautiful nominees. The committee will be looking for a block that has an attractive appearance, with grounds neaily kept) and any other special qualities that attract the passerby. Fronts only will be assessed. MeKay was concerned that people would think nominations had to be **just great big beautiful homes."* But what the committee is looking for is ‘*just something that if you went by you might say, ‘Isn’t that a nice place!" °° AS a result of the overwhelming response the gardens committee was expanded. Awards for the top three homes in each municipality will be awarded at the respective municipal halis some time in September at which time the win- ning blocks will be published. Heed emergency vehicle warnings THE DISTRICT of North Van- couver Fire Department reminds motorists that the law requires they pull to the right-hand curb to allow emergency vehicles to pass. Failure to do so can cause serious accidents or delays in arriving at the scene of an emergency. When you hear sirens or see red lights, pull to the right side of the road and stop. If you cannot move right, move in any direction that will allow the emergency vehicle through. Look first before moving. If there is no place to move, sit tight. Emergency vehicles often have to stop suddenly, and someone fol- lowing too close could become in- volved in an accident and emergency personnel could be in- jured when attempting to get out of their vehicles to respond to the call. Please heed the warning posted on the back of most fire engines which states that vehicles behind them should be at least 150 metres behind. if you are a pedestrian and hear sirens, stay on the curb. Do not step into the sireet, even after the emergency vehicle has passed. There may be more following at a distance. Keep children close to you. They may try to dart out to see the fire truck or ambulance.
