ee, ENVIRONMENTAL WATCH AND THE
Howe Sound WESTERN CANADA WILDERNESS COMMITTEE
PULP AND PAPER LIMITED .
In your recently released flyer entitled, Howe Sound Pulp Mills,
Proud Partners in Pollution, you have once again attacked our company,
Howe Sound Pulp and Paper Limited of Port Mellon, and made damaging
and misleading statements about our environmental performance.

© You accuse us of poisoning people and say we have lied but offer
no proof to support these outrageous charges.

e Similarly, you offer no proof for your claim that we have “drastically
increased emissions of cancer-causing dioxins and furans” from burning
sludge. In fact, burning sludge is one of the methods of disposal approved
by the B.C. Ministry of Environment.

e You claim that Environment Canada has stated that northern Howe
Sound has the highest levels of acid rain in western Canada when, in fact,
they have made no such statement.

¢ You accuse us of “drastically increasing sulphur dioxide emissions”
when we have substantially reduced those emissions.

We have tried to work cooperatively and constructively with your
organizations. Last fall, we met with the West Coast Environmental Law
Association, which represented both your organizations, to review our
Environmental Impact Statement and address your concerns.

We have built a mill that has an outstanding environmental
performance compared to any kraft pulp raill worldwide. We have lived up
to all our promises and commitments. Yet we find you are still attacking us
with emotional arguments devoid of fact or reason.

We invite people to examine the facts and decide for themselves who
is behaving responsibly in this issue.

We believe you owe an apology to the citizens of the local communities
for your blatant attempts to inflame the issue, polarize public opinion, and
for your own purposes, maintaining an atmosphere of crisis where none
exists.

We ask that your organizations conduct themselves with greater
integrity in the future and work constructively with industry and the
communities so we can all enjoy a safe, clean environment supported
by a strong economy.
