music Soundtrack for our times| OLOR THE decade green. While radio frequencies have been crowded with recycled oldies, groups with some- thing to say about contem- porary issues of concern have traditionally been jammed out. Local crusaders for enlightened consciousness Spirit of the West have been singing out from a commercially-disfranchised folk fr- inge for most of the group's seven-year stint as a musical enti- ty. But along the way, Geoffrey Kelly and John Mann, newly join- ed by Hugh McMillan and Linda McRae, have collected a fervent following. They've also honed and hardened a sound and an attitude. The resulting cauldron of Celtic- infused shake’eni up shanties bubbles with messages calling to task political puffery and fin de siecte folly. Spirit of the West's latest effort, Save This House, may be seen as a soundtrack for our times, a timely call of warning tempered by a healthy dose of humanistic op- timism. Music Now recently spoke with Spirit of the West member Geof- frey Kelly. Music Now: Is it strange seeing Save This House doing chart ac- tion on the 99.3 Fox list of Top 30 rock compact discs? A few years ago we never would have envisioned ourselves having a song on the Fox or on AM radio. But { think it’s maybe a positive sign in that the radio formats are starting to change and people are getting a little bit tired of the tradi- tional Top 40 love song. | think it’s time for a change. For us this has been completely different as far as radio support goes. We primarily had support from unviversity and college radio and co-op-type radio stations. But this single (Save This House) is being picked up by most rock stations across the country. Music Now: This global burst of green consciousness seems to be a matter of the scene catching up with your longstanding vision. Do you fear Spirit of the West is going to get lost in the proliferation of bands jumping in to cash in? Kelly: | think there is going to be a degree of cashing in on this green- ing process. But as far as we're concerned, green consciousness is something we've always tried to JENN-AIR C2388 DOWNDRAFT COOKTOP ¢ Twin convertible to accept alt Cartridge and accessory options © Energy saver grill included for year round indoor barbecuing © Black porcelain Euro took e Max. duct run up to 60 feet ¢ Illustrated with optionat cartridge Combination Price $1999 mw JENN-AIR SEE YOUR LOCAL PARTICIPATING DEALER Y,FRANKS APPLIANCES LTD. 503- 15th St, West Vancouver 926-0124 A short block north of Marine Drive Use your VISA or MASTERCARD Open 9:30 to 5:30 daily, except Sunday Open Friday until 8 p.m. promote in our music. People like Phil Collins are singing about homeless people. He never used to sing about that, but he’s going to reach a lot more people than Spirit of the West. We can look at that in a positive light. Music Now: There's a nifty song on Save This House called Vater In The Well. |s that song the Kelly-Mann vision of heaven on Earth or is it an expression of your concept of an attainable future? Kelly: ti’s actually more or less in- spired by touring through the Kootenays and playing the Gulf Islands and places like that — where people really do live an alternative lifestyle and money is not the most important thing in their lives. It stemmed from that. The whole hippie vision, we used to sort of look down on it. But it had a great message and | think it’s coming back to it now — peace and love and keep the Earth green — it’s pretty much what we're talking about today. 21 - Wednesday, May 16, 1990 ~ North Shore News CIRCUIT CIRCUS FAMILY AMUSEMENT CENTER located at 1935 LONSDALE AVENUE a INVITES YOU TO SUNDER ENJOY NEW MGMT. * Coupon expires June 15/90 & only one ad per cust. 25¢(25¢ 26025 | ONE FREE !ONE FREE !
