Triathletes help give kids motivation IMAGINE AN 11-year-old boy whose life, for the most part, has been confined to a wheelchair and the four walls of his room at the Vancouver Children’s Hospital. By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter Now picture a 39-year-old man with a career, a family, a house in West Vancouver and whose body is trained to endure such rigors as 100-mile races. The contrast between two people such as Ryan Bonson and Shane Collins couldn’t be more extreme; the one whose lifestyle is controll-- ed by severe spina bifida, the other who controls his lifestyle. But it is just this difference that makes the friendship between Bonson and Collins tick and it is also what makes the Triathletes for Kids program gel. “The whole idea of an athlete brings an image of being healthy. [t isn’t winning that counts.” Bonson and Collins are the in- augural team of Triathletes for Kids, a program still in its infancy in Vancouver. An offspring of the L.A.-based Triathletes for Kids, Cokins brought the program here a year ago. “It’s been probably one of the most successful things for the boys. They have gotten different things out of it,’’ says Gunning. “The program has gotten the kids out of the aspect of being a sick child.”” Bonson plays a part in Collins’ athleticism by virtue of keeping his training log. “It forces him to do something.
