Windsor athletes
offered scholarships

THREE WINDSOR high school students have each been offered
full athletic football scholarships to join the Simon Frascr Univer-
sity Clansmen.

Chris Harris, Warren Castiey and Craig Norris, all 1989 pradu-
ates of Windsor, were offered four-year scholarships. Harris was
offered $1,500 annually over four years, while Castley and Norris
were offered $1,000.

** All three have tremendous potential and with continued hard
work both in and out of the classroom they will be successful,’
said Windsor’s football coach Jay Prepchuk.

West Van divers
eye B.C. medals

WEST VANCOUVER'S Paige Gordon and Grace Van Berknm are
hoping to bring home a gold medal from the 1989 Canada Summer
Games held this year in Saskatoon.

The dynamic duo, who attend Kitsilano high school, will com-
pete with Team B.C. for the crown.

Gordon, 16, won a gold medal at the 1988 junior national diving
championships in Toronto for tower one-metre and three-metre
events. Van Berkum, also 16, was awarded a silver in the 100 and
300-mietre diving events.

“<We have an idea who will be coming out of Alberta, Saskat-
chewan, Manitoba and Quebec, so with Paige and Grace taking
gotd and silver at the 88 nationals, there will be medals for B.C. in
Saskatoon,” said manager Gail Revitt.

Team B.C. coach Irene MacDonald said she is also confident
that Gordon and Van Berkum, along with Gordon's 17-year-old
sister Megan Gordon, who came third in ihe senior nationals in
Calgary last year, will finish with medals this year in Saskstoon.

Locals win
dogfish prizes

NORTH VANCOUVERITES were big winners at the second an-
oval Dogfish Derby at Horseshoe Bay on June 18.

Janet Young of North Vancouver pulled in a first-prize, nine-
pound degfish, winning the four-day salmon fishing excursion at
Chinook Cove, Knight Inlet.

Mel Maddess, also of North Vancouver, wor the top raffle prize
— a 12-foot Alcan aluminum cer-top, Prince Craft boat.

The annual event is sponsored by Seymour Salmonid Scciety,
operator of the Seymour River salmon and trout hatchery.

Miayor Don Lanskail of West Vancouver presented the prizes.
The derby was held in conjunction with Horseshoe Bay Day.

Winner of the second derby prize was Bill Fodor, North Van-
couver, with a 744-pound dogfish.

Thirteen-year-otdi Jim Hong, with a two pound, 12 ounce fish,
was the winner of the under-14 group.

Women hockey
players sought

WOMEN INTERESTED in the sporti of ice hockey may soon have
a club of their own.

Lynn Vslley’s Anthea West wants to hear from women,
preferably over the age of 30, who will join a Women's Old Timers
hockey team in the fall.

Games will take place each week, hopefully on a weeknight, at
RecCentre Lonsdale. Players must bring full cquipment, and
referees will be provided.

No experience is required — ‘‘it’s wide open’’ to all skilf levels,
says West.

NV senior picks up track gold

NORTH VANCOUVER'S Hans
Weickardt has added three gold
medals to a long list of achieve-
ments after returning from the
1989 Canadian Masters Track and
Field championships in Edmonton,

The 75-year-old German-born
runner captured firsts in the 800-
metre, 1500-metre, and, for the
first time, in the 400-metre event in
his ave category.

Said Weickardt: ‘1 didn’t expect

three firsts. I didn't expect to win
in the 400-metre event because it
was my first time.”

Weickardt moved to Vancouver
from Toronto last year and now
trains at the Norwesters Track and
Ficld Club. He is a member of the
Lions Gate Road Runners of
North Vancouver.

For the last three years, he has
been the Canadian masters running
champion in the 800 and 1500-
metre events. He was the 1988

North American champion in the
1500-meire event in the 70-74 age
division of the Canadian Masters
Track and Field Association, and
was ranked fifth in the world for
the 800 and 1500-metre events in
his age group at the 1987 Veterans’
World championships in
Melbourne, Australia.

This year, Weickardt plans to
compete in the Veterans’ World
championships in Eugene, Oregon,
July 27-Aug. 6.
