Shipyard wins ~Fe F eee 3/7.0m Contract NORTH VANCOUVER-based Vancouver Shipyards Ltd. (VSL) has been awarded a $7.5 million contract to build six, 2,500-tonne capacity log-chip barges for its corporate parent, Seaspan Interna- tional Ltd. The order is part of an ongoing Seaspan program to upgrade its 300-barge fleet. VSL general manager Tom Ward said Friday the contract repre- sents the first new ship construction work this year for the ship- yard, which has built 10 of the barges for Seaspan over the past six years. He estimated that the job will employ between 60 and 100 workers for the balance of 1989. “J's a very positive lift,’’ he sald. Ward added that VSL has been busier in the first quarter of this year than had been anticipated, with a workforce of approximately 310 concentrating primarily on repairing fishing vessels, tugs and ferries. The 310-person workforce was up from the 200 that had been anticipated for the yard for the early part of 1989. Woman pulled to safety NORTH VANCOUVER RCMP and Vancouver Police foiled a suicide bid by a woman who thrcatened to Jump from the North Yancouver side of the Second Narrows Bridge Wednesday nirht. Police talked to the 34-year-old woman for more than an hour before grabbiag her. A North Vancouver RCMP spokesperson said the woman, who had climbed over the bridge railing, was shaking uncontrollably just before police pulled her back to safety af 6:45 p.m. Emergency vehicles and equipment tied up traffic in one of the southbound lanes of the bridge for approximately two hours. Police arrest robbery suspect A JOINT investigation by Vancouver Police and Coquitlam RCMP, in conjunction with other Lower Mainland police depart- ments including North Vancouver RCMP, has resulted in the arrest of a man beileved to be responsible for a series of Lower Mainland robberies. During the past three months police have been investigating a oumber of robberies, including one in West Vancouver and one in North Vancouver. The method of operation for each robbery indicated the possi- bility that the same person was involved. Police arrested Daniel Kai Larsen, 28, of Port Coquitlam May 3. Larsen Fas been charged with 29 counts of robbery, two counts of attempted robbery and one count of wearing a disguise during the alleged offences. Larsen has been remanded in custody to appear in Coquitlam provincial court May 18. Gun recovery nets charges for two A VANCOUVER young offender and a 20-year-old Vancouver man face mzitiple charges following a March 30 seizure of a .44 Smith & Wesson revolver by West Vancouver Police. A police officer pulled over a car in the 3300-block of Marine Drive and noted that the two occupants were “nervous.”’ Police said the driver was unable io produce a driver's licence.
