14 - Friday, December 16, 1988 - North Shore News Be aware of the fireplace safety THE FIREPLACE may not be an important supplier of heat in your home. In fact, it is often a source of energy loss since it removes warm- ed combustion air from the home and sends it up the chimney. However, the fireplace is an im- portant symbol of warmth, securi- ty and the value of close ties with home, family and friends. This is particularly true during the winter holiday season. The fireplace may seem a refuge. But if neglected or mistreated it can be a hazard — to health and safety. Here are some dos and don’ts in tending your fireplace this season. Des: ® Have the chimney flue cleaned by a qualified person, once a year if frequent use is made of the fireplace. © Clean the firebox regularly. * Burn only three pieces of dry wood at one time; hardwoods are preferred. ® Close the firescreen when the fire is burning. © if the fire is smoky, find out why; it isn’t healthy to breathe in carbon monoxide and other pollu- tants that are being released. elf glass doors are in use, make sure there is sufficient combustion air to permit the fire to burn clean- ly. On Flowers This exquisite full-colour volurne celebrates the wonder and beauty of flowers. It weaves together myth, legend, recipes, and folklore with stunning photographs of arrangements by outstanding designers. $39.95 rules Don'ts: ° Don’t put the Christmas tree near the fireplace. © Don't hang the Christmas stockings directly above the fire. © Don’t burn Christmas wrapp- ing paper or trees in the fireplace. @® Don’t burn charcoal, or flammable or combustible liquids such as oil, charcoal starters, gasoline or kerosene. © Don’t rely on a quick look up the chimney to determine whether the flue is clean. To help reduce problems with fireplaces and chimneys, Canadian Standards Association (CSA) recently published a comprehensive standard: CAN/CSA-A405-M87, Design and Construction of Ma- sonry Chimneys and Fireplaces. The standard sets forth mini- mum design and construction re- quirements for residential-type chimneys and fireplaces. Also in- cluded are guidelines on the maintenance and repair of chimneys and the various ways of supplying combustion air to the fireplace. The requirements in the stan- dard for materials, and for design and construction, provide guidance for masons, contractors and building inspectors. Tae appendix on maintenance and repair of ma- sonry chimneys and fireplaces con- tains useful information.
