Dear Editor:

Recently we had the thrill and
honor of hosting the Federation
Cup in West Vancouver, probubly
the most prestigious tennis tour-
nament ever held in Canada.

During this time many favorable
comments were made concerning
the hospitality and behavior of the
people and the crowds, but per-
sonally | was disgusted by the poor
sportsmanship displayed.

itis customary and courteous to
applaud good shots by either side
and obviously, with good reason,
the crowds have demonstrated pur-
tisan support for the Canadian
team, which has really put this
country on the international tennis
map. But surety this enthusiasm
was misdirected all too frequently
when the mistakes of our oppo-
nents, even double faults, were
applauded.

I would like to have had the op-
portunity to apologize to our
visitors for this breach of etiquette,
particularly to Natalia Zvereva,
even though | am far from being
pro-Soviet. After all, she is only 16
and it is littl wonder that she
broke down in tears after her
match with Helen Kelesi.
