WV reader Mi. Sound Dear Editor: Snow Job, Says Environmentalist — according to your April 15 front page article on Terry Jacks and Howe Sounc Pulp Mill. Terry Jacks, ‘‘cum en- vironmentalist,’’ appears to use a great deal of licesce with his accusations. In defending Howe Sound Pulp Mill, I have no axe to grind, but in the essence of fair play I'd like to res- pond to Mr. Jacks’ charges. Before I hung up my hard hat and steel-toe boots a year ago, I was an occupational hygiene officer with the B.C. Workers’ Compensation Board. Among my clientele were three coastal pulpmills — one of which was Canfor’s Howe Sound Pulp Mill. Over a period of seven years, { did regular and numerous inspections at the mill site. 1 conducted air monitoring for hydrogen sulphide, methyl mercaptan and sulphur dioxide gases as well as for particulates. 1 cannot recall finding levels of any of these substances to be in excess of permissible concentration levels (the ‘latter established by scientific date (ACGIH) ‘at or below which it is believed most in- dividuals are not at any risk) in the mill environment except on the occasional instance of process upset. I believe Mr. Jacks and Dr. Sugar are in error when Dear Editor: ; Regarding a ban on outdoor burning in the District of North Vancouver. The North Shore is an area of considerable foliage and many trees, and most citizens take pride in keeping these areas in top shape therefore garden refuse does result. Ever since the District of North Vancouver existed, small amounts of burning took place. The original regulations were the best and that was to burn at any time. Citizens took advantage of dry weather and there was little or no smoke. It does appear that if this burn- ing ban is allowed to continue that the next ban will be against the use of fireplaces which most of the homes in the area have. 1 therefore suggest that the local council review the situation, remove the ban and allow burning of garden refuse once again. You people are cheating yourselves and your community. I would no more vote for someone who based a platform solely on their abortion believes (either for or against this service) than I would for someone who based their campaign on any single issue. ; No, I’m not running for elec- tion, I’m just a member in good standing who is finally mad enough at the irresponsibleness of the society members to speak out. Please, this:year consider ALL the issues — don’t be tunnel visioned. C. McLeod . This gas isn’t found to any great degree at this mill. in all my dealings with management and union employees at Howe Sound Pulp, I found them to be concerned, cooperative corporate citizens and in- dividuals who have continued to upgrade their mill to bring it up to today’s standards. What they’ve ac- complished over the last seven years has been im- pressive. I -believe Terry Jacks and your newspaper, as his platform, owe Canfor, Howe Sound Pulp Mill an apology for damning without all relevant facts. As a West Van resident myself, I'm confident that this mil} does not pose a health hazard to West Van residents. | would encourage West Vancouverites to go to the mill open houses and learn for themselves.
