The use of natural gas also rose during the same period —- from a market share of 34.8 per cent in 1973 to 45.8 per cent in 1986 — while the market share for oil declined from 55.5 per cent to 20.1 per cent nationwide, In Atlantic Canada, the use of electricity rose from 4.2 per cent to 27.1 per cent; in Quebec, from 10.4 per cent to 57.7 per cent; On- tario, seven per cent to 18.7 per cent; Prairies, 2.7 per cent to 9.1 per cent; and British Columbia, 7.5 per cent to 21.2 per cent. One of the reasons for this trend is price — electricity is proving . itself more economical.
